I'm really not normally one for gripping or long posts, but I have to express my disappointment in how this server turned out to be. When I found this site and read about the mod, I was excited. Finally! A game I'd always loved from the past was playable again with others! Plus all the additions and the possibility of some good RP in a controlled environment was very tempting. I even hooked up with an official, ingame faction. Finally a chance to really virtually live in that universe.
However, after not too long a period of time (approx. 4 weeks) , what started out as an new, virtual adventure, turned into frustration and heartbreak. For all intents and purposes, the official Disco server has turned into an unruly free for all. The idea of the faction IDs and the rules associated with them are pretty much gone as no one really pays any attention. If I had a credit for every Freelancer pirate I ran into, I wouldn't have to trade anymore. After 4 weeks of hopping around this server, it seems that 9 out of 10 players I encounter on there is either an adolescent, out of control pirate who shoots anyone and everyone they see, or a disciplined, RP-based pirate who is occasionally entertaining to encounter............but pirates none the less. Everyone is encouraged not to gripe or complain about encountering other players who regularly ignore the posted rules. So now everyone seemingly does their own thing.
So then I ask the question, "Where are the admins? Don't they see what their server is turning into?" I've eventually found out that the answer to that is, first, the admins are the ones running the worst of the official and unofficial pirate factions and, second, yes they do appear to see what's happening. So as a result, and after one last play session where I was engaged by pirates at every jump and Trade Lane I used, my vessel docked at the nearest planet and, in RP style, the crew abandoned ship and went into hiding.
The server isn't fun anymore. It's become a haven for those who want nothing more than to blast everyone in sight and thumb their noses at anyone who objects...........a chaotic free-for-all. The idea was a good one, but it requires a team of people who care and expect more out of the players. So, yes, I haven't been back on the server for sometime now and I just finished having to explain that to the friends I had made there......who mostly feel as I do. I don't expect this will change anything. In fact, I expect this probably turn into one of those threads where most everyone trashes the OP as an idiot, a noob, a carebear, or a troll. That's fine. Maybe there are others here who feel as I do and maybe they'll speak up. I can only hope that this might help start a new conversation.
Take care everyone. I hope things might turn around soon.
Freelancer is a space sim, a shooter one. When you trade, it's to get money. Why do you get money? Because you want other ships to pew with. Except for few cases, people play here for, to a some point roleplay, and pvp.
I know this might sound cruel, but money making isn't meant to be fun to begin with.
Before dropping the entire game and mod, you should at least try out the other side of the coin: make a snub/cap, try to get the hang of it and go on shooting stuff; it might turn up to be fun.

Leave houses - that's what I have done to keep my sanity. You may possibly stay away from Omicron 74 while at it too to avoid loosing faith in humanity due to situation escalating.
