A certain ukranian has recently reminded me the glory of Mount & Blade, a game that I consider pretty much unique because of the game concept and possibilities, kinda RPG/RTS/First person shooter thingy (leveling up + party management + live action). I currently play it with Prophensy of Pendor, a mod adviced of "experienced" players.
Long and boring introduction to the game:
It's on a way similar to Freelancer, but based on a medieval world where you're a simple person (depending on the origins that you choose you may be a noble, a trader, a peasant, etc) who is supposed to, some day, rule the entire continent (which is completely optional as there's no "victory") by gathering an army, joining a faction and slowly conquering it. So far so good, a nice game, nothing too shiny nonetheless. You can play as mercenary, outlaw, lord, lone knight, and so on.
However what makes it especial is that it's completely moddable (armors, factions, world map, cities, troops, spawns, everything, sort of Freelancerish).
It includes lots of difficulty settings for you to play with, as well as any way to play you can come up with (most realistic is gathering a war party and butchering a certain faction) and the graphics are quite good on max quality.
There's an expansion, Warband, which includes several improvements, overall on the freedom (in vanilla you can't make your own faction and be king, although you can achieve a marshall status) game mechanics and a multiplayer option (pvp). The gameplay itself doesn't lose anything, it only adds more nice stuff, so I'd advice getting it straight after vanilla. There's a free trial version that you can download from taleworlds for both vanilla and warband.

If you play Warband, then I strongly suggest you try the Brytenwalda mod for it. It's a very exquisite mod set in the early medieval England. ( when you had the viking and dane invasions and england was composed of around 50 independent states, and you had the anglo-saxonic migrations )
It's a very good mod, I dare say.
But all in all, Mount and Blade is a game I do recommend. It's very open and fun and immersive. Nothing compares to slashing an angry mob, bunch of looters or a wave of angry peasants with your trusty old axe while on horseback.
PS: Vaegirs ftw!
Also, I doubt Warband is an "expansion" . It's just the new version of it. The "expansions" or extra content are "With Fire and Sword " ( set in the 17th century East Europe afaik ) and "Napoleonic Wars" ( name speaks for itself ) but they are stand-alone as far as I know

only problem with this game is after you have played it, you can't play anything like skyrim where you just bash a button to swing your sword back and forth
Nords are best for sieges, both defending and attacking, but cuz of the infantry, not cuz of the archers. The best archers stats wise and equipment wise, as I remember, are the vaegirs. Best range troops are the swadian crossbowmen though.

rhodoks marksmen. ive defended towns with ~60 of these against hundreds of attackers. they have better bows than the swadians and they're better shots with them too, and they have more health. plus they get board shields and war picks, making them better in melee than all other ranged troops and even a lot of melee troops. all rhodoks army (roughly 60/40 marksmen/sergeants) with just me & friends for cavalry is the most fun army I've used.
