Mount and blade will always be one of my favorite games, and Sibelius is completely right, don't even bother with the original game, Warband improved gameplay in every way, and there isn't much storyline to be missed anyway. Heh, come to think of it, there isn't much storyline in the game at all, but still it's an awesome game.
I'm currently using a mod compilation with only vanilla improvements such as Diplomacy, enjoying it immensely.

Happy fun times.
have you? they're the two best in the game and the difference between them is slight: huscarls have better stats, sergeants have better equipment. sergeants are also quicker to train and cheaper to keep.
anyhow, I use armies from one nation at a time, picking and choosing is boring to me. and sergeants & marksmen>huscarls and archers. plus rhodoks stuff is the best for garrisons, which is imo the most important thing for your troops
I recruit anything I can find. I stick all my footmen in my castle and take all my cavalry on a bloody swathe through the Vaegirs in the name of the Khanate
Hah, Reid. The great thing about it is you can roll as anything you want.
I once tried making a purely unlawful merc band composed of Peasants I captured and kidnapped. It was funny and worked for a bit. Sultan Hakim later smashed me though
Oh my god, the time I've wasted on this game. It's one of my all time favorites. Because you can literally own your own kingdom. What's cooler than that? You have lords that will fight by your side, when you besiege castles and what not. Sooooo fun. I also love the first person horse combat. They did that VERY well. Though the movement on foot is a little awkward. Such as side stepping. Just a little bit. In third person your character looks retarded though, ha!
