Why not then load up SP without campaign and set the starting credits to biggest. Use readme for guidance for ships and locations. Then go checking out ships. And get that bigger-is-better fetish out of your system that way. It worked for me. No more fetishes. And you'll see that flying the biggest jumbojet is not going to bring you the biggest pleasure.
By the way. You get more respect from people flying that one ugly Bloodhound or Wolfhound than any other ship. This is not really about flying the sexiest ship but rather having fun roleplaying your ship and character. But if you insist flying certain a ship then find out which faction lets you to do so, contact the faction leader and start working up the ladder.
EDIT: Seems that you made the post before I got to answer to your presumed cap-ship fetish. My bad. My apoligies.
So what? You want a VHF, woohoo. Normally I'm not one for saying "go discover" because you're right, the mod is huge, with a LOT of different ships to cover.
But...
That being said...pick yourself up a Guardian from Liberty and fly around Sirius. Honestly, you'll see them all, whether from a player ship cruising by "Hey, that's a fine ship. Mind if i pull up and have a looksee?" or from landing on certain bases (for VHF's, land on Freeports, Planets, and Battleships)
[Flame-retardant suit enabled]
Or if you REALLY want to know where stuff is, d/l Datastorm and have a looksee. Yes, I use it because I constantly forget where stuff is and it's easier than digging out my explorer, find it, and then get back into my other char.

I hate to tell you, but you're probably not going to find the answer you're looking for on the forums, as most people will say for you to find out for yourself. And it REALLY is half the fun. You're not new, having registered here (I'm assuming to read the forums, good job) and should have a grasp on the situation unless there's something I don't know. Find a transport (Pittsburgh) and trade your way along the starlanes. That's really how I got to know the universe.

I suppose I shouldn't flame you, so I won't. Anyway, you do have a point as far as community response; either 'go discover' or 'blasted capwhores', the latter which you specified is incorrect. Anyway, my personal favorites are the pirate VHFs, so you might want to check those out. Course, you should probably do that in SP or as an ID'd freelancer/generic pirate (kill lots of BHG, all pirates will love you), otherwise you'll probably end up being horribly OORP (like flying into gamma with a sabre/odin to exchange for titan; good luck coming out alive).
I would like to reinforce the idea that you should pick faction, then ship, but if you really have different priorities then that's your choice I suppose. Go fly around SP, and when you're happy, welcome to disco!
All I did was agree with you that the mod is big, jeez, whats the point in us trying to help you if you're gonna jump to conclusions?
Have fun looking for your 'pretty' ship, I still think your gonna have trouble when you find out what the faction that sells it can and can't do.
I actually thought you meant he wanted a big ship too >.> The way you worded it it seamed kinda like it.
However, if he wants to choose his faction based on the ship class, I think thats a fine way of doing it. That's one of the reasons I chose RM, simply because the ships are amazing looking. It was only after that I discovered the RP rich environment I got into.
