those people just get on my nerves
The thing is... as I mentioned earlier.. you have the entire mature side of the community on your side, in essence we are all ambassadors embued with authority!
They cant 'do what i want' ...just be polite, screenshot em and move along...

I salute you for your attitude though!
*salute*
That's the idea. If PMs (in-character, preferably) don't work, don't let it get you down. I've actually based my life strategy on a similar principle (I can't do anything about it personally, so I hand it off to someone who can and don't get stressed about it.) and it's made me a lot happier. The random people who absolutely refuse to RP can be dealt with by admins, but I've found that if prodded gently (in-RP) the vast majority of people are willing to change their ways.
It's a lot less stressful for everyone to be nice, and acknowledge their noobishness as a former noob yourself, than to scorn them.
Another excellent post from you, you seem to be another well of infinite wisdom. Good job, and keep up the good work!
I will try to relate the experiance of bumbeling around from both sides.
When I started I had some heads up-thanks to some contact with Dboy on another site so I new this was a RP server. I still made several mistakes and bumbles, and even got yelled at by 13centkiller for using smilies in system chat. Also I docked at the Corsair base in Delta with a military ID (I was trading and had the civ ID, i went over lvl40 and a Military one was the only one I could buy there.) I undocked and was chatting with one corsair and another came up in his GB and blew my xship away. :angry2: Do you feel special now? The only explination I got was "Corsairs don't like military IDed people" which I realize NOW but I lost a good chunk of the little money I had because this guy wanted the kill. As a community we need to do a better job of making new people feel welcome and part of the community.
As a slightly more experianced player I have tried to make my corrections of newbies more in-RP. "//lol, where did you get that ship?" "Victor your comms are scrambled, please use channel RP." If that doesn't get through I make a comment about after-market comm units being all messed up...and then I PM someone saying "i was trying to tell you to keep all your messages inRP." Most listen, some don't, and will lose interest right away.
The thing is, I will help anybody, no matter how screwed up their RP is at the moment as long as they are willing to try to learn. If someone isn't willing to try, I don't give them the time of day.
So in a sense I fully agree with the OP, we need to be more tolerant of those who don't know what this server is about.
On the other hand, the "vet" who is chatting might have already tryed to correct 4 or 5 "i r pwn u" peoples, and while that doesn't make it right and should DEFINATLY be avoided (if you can't say it nice, don't say it:P) there is usually a reason behind it.
When I first started three months back, I was quite intimidated. I had never RP'd before, ever. I had played Freelancer single player several times (unmodded). I found Discovery when I was looking for news about Freelancer 2. But I am very glad I found it.
To be honest I have found all the people very welcoming, and I have not had any abuse or major problems, maybe I have been lucky. I am a shy person and still find it a bit hard to talk/type to people, but I do try. I started as totally ignorant, I went to the forums, and read, then read some more. I find it amazing that anyone would try and fly here without going to the forums first!
I have meesed up a lot, and I am quite a poor combat pilot, but I love the Role Play.
I do think its a shame when people log on then pester everyone with questions that they should have gotten from the forums, the question "whats an ID" springs to mind. However, abusing them seems pointless, although I have never witnessed this. As I said my early experiance was great. When I had question the Admins were curtious and polite as were all the rest.
Its a shame you can't make a visit to the Discovery forum compulsary.
I love this game especially as I am house bound, so the ability to play and interact with the outside world is a boon to me!
Long live Discovery!!

I am guilty of rule bashing... i admit it. but ONLY to players who SHOULD know better.
I spend a lot of my discovery time on [Sirius.Statistics]001 for the entire purpose of trying to get new people into the role play aspect.
I use the 'statistics database' to tell them about factions, ships, answering any questions they have, but only ever giving enough information to push them in the right direction.
it gives you a bit of a warm fuzzy every time you help someone, show them how to enjoy the server, and re-inforce the rules and roleplaying, without being rude, annoying or going OOC.
Many things frustrate me.... new people who do nothing but ask for money, the longer term players who use OOC in system chat to tell off anyone, about anything...
system: // you cant do that, its against the rules
how does this look to the other 10 people in new york? YEA, VERY PROFESSIONAL.
anyway, with a bit of a nudge and polite, role played chat, its very easy to get people moved in the right direction.
I didn't had any problem when I started. The only big change to me was that on disco we use the // instead of the (( I was used to on FW.
When you go on a RP server, you are ready to play as a roleplayer.
You cannot expected to be greeted warmly if you act out of context.
Those who does, I'm tempted to say they deserve the bashing. Especially when the word RP is written large and clear on the name of the server.
A server that would tolerate such people, eventually transform into an "occasional RP" server, and when it has gone in this slope, it turns in less than a few months a pvp server.

Whooa! Thats a bit of an extremist view no?
You assume that because you are intelligent, have initiative and understood RP from the word go that everyone does?
The average Joe out there does not even know what RP means... it's kinda like E=MC squared... I know what it means but I have no clue what it entails...
They log on thinking that it's an Rp server with Geeks and Nerds trying to be tough and play with ship dolls pretending to be 'da Big Boss'... and when we get 'tough' we prove them right!
In their mind it's 'LoL u G33k... in the r3Al w0rld I'd pwnz u!'
We have Admins that can deal with the worst of them, but most jump at the chance to learn a new dynamic to playing these games...
When they realize what RP actually is, they inject fresh new energy into our community and start adding great value!
Methinks the only 'Bad Cops' on the server should be the Admins, the rest of us play 'good cop' and when the poor fellow loses his Battleship and all weapons and upgrades, he'll come back to saying..'sheesh..I should have taken your advice!' (if he comes back..hahahaaaa)
Real life has enough lack of grace and mercy... this is an awesome place to practice our unflinching patience..heh heh...
*climbs off soapbox and feels short again*

I'm not pretending to be intelligent.
But what you described of the average Joe seems to be a nobody who has nothing to do on a rp server and should get lost on a pvp one.
Yes, I have a very extremist view of RP, because I've been to a few rp server of diverse game, had fun with a bunch of guys, and saw our little world of fun getting destroyed by a larger bunch of idiots who looked upon us as, as you call it, nerdz, with no real life - they go straight down to insulting. (but in fact, if average Joe thinks like your version of the 1337 13 years old counter strike kid, what is he doing on a rp server at all?)
I'm not saying the average joe we have here is unrespectful - they are just ignorant, they don't read, don't care about how to correctly immerge in another kind of community.
I have heard this thing somewhere else, and I think it's a very good example. It's a bit like, you are talking with your group of friends (we, the discovery community that is mainly on forum.). Then, suddenly you have a nobody (average newbie), who just appeared, and comes in, none of you know him, he doesnt know none of you, but he comes in, try to incrustate with his view of what to talk about and all.
This is a RP server, it is blatantly specified on server, in the little console message, by the players, on forum, in the rules - it specifies you must act as so everywhere.
If you just ignore these messages - what might I say, are you blind? We do not want your imported version of your way of playing, if you come on this server, I believe you should adapt to our way of playing.
No, that's not "intelligence", it is simple logical reasonning. You can't just go in a group of people without caring about how they function.
anyway, just my point of view.
that said, I usually try to help newbies by private messages. So don't think of me just being a big annoyed nerdz ranting and doing nothing. I do try to help those that can be helped.
But don't expect me to help someone talking in "hey lolz I r t3h 1337".
