Directing trader activity towards lanes - attn all devs

the 3.5kers (namely, BWT and Firefly) are still very profitable trading vessels. Quite possibly the best for the cost to buy them. I'm curious as to what the variety of uses they serve is aside from trading? Exploration ships maybe, but then they don't need such big cargo for that. Should be pointing more towards X-shuttle/freighters for that.

I have to admit that i have not read the entire thread. But If the cruise speed is supposed to be around 90ms, what is the thrust and travel speed supposed to be like then. It cannot be too low, because especially those large transports can suffer from inertia and speed when they try to line up with lanes or try to dock, which adds up to the trading time.

No. No. NO. People should not be punished for using 5k in systems such as Dublin ( Graves Station and Hood Battleship, Omega-3 ( Planet Sprague and Douglas Station ), Omega-11 ( Solarius Station ), Tau-23 ( Java Station ) etc etc.

A small nerf would do the trick as letting them be intercepted by pirates would put more risk in cruising as opposed to taking lanes.

I've never seen any pirate in a BWT or a Firefly. And PTransport has cargo of 2900, so I'm sure that could be a special exception. Liners would probably need adjusted accordingly as well.

Well, I guess I'm offering my idea as an alternative...because I think the idea of a super slow 5ker is horrible. Max cruise of 90 is still awful. Why wouldn't I just fly a Barge, then? At least try for an honest medium like 200-250 cruise. It's STILL slower than everything else out there except the Barge.

If you think this warrants a whole new topic...I suppose I could consider it, but seems like a lot of work when the discussion is already right here.

I would still say, make the 5K = 10K/8K and implement the ideas. Because for a mere 700 units increment in cargo, one wouldn't fly them at all.
P.S. Just my thought. Other than this, I see no problems in this idea, infact it might stir fun among those who want pirate encounters.

I have seen and I have experienced piracy in a BWT. Well, a lot of times to be true. Go to Tau 23 and the neighboruing systems.Also for the combat part,

In mother Taus, a BWT solos a cruiser.

People always will find the easier way to make money. That's a given no matter the situation. I have always found it weird that all transports and larger have the same Cruise speed, and I think it would add to variety and utility to all the different transport classes if they had differing cruise speeds. The question I have on Pavel's suggestion is what specifically that speed should be. He's proposed 5kers Max of 90. I'd go more for 225-250 and further adjusts to smaller size vessels as I suggested earlier.

I get your points about mining systems without lanes guys. Let's nerf trains to 200 m/s, it's a bit over half of standard 350 m/s, allows for those desperate enough to fly with their >4.3k transports straight to the fields (although it'd be much more inRP if big trains had to pick up ore from bases close to lanes, or from miners delivering it there.

I always wondered why don't all transports have 40 m/s reverse thrust speed, like Hegemon. It'd make docking those fat big ships to lanes much easier.

Didn't think deeper about your proposal the first time, sorry, my bad.
Well, what I think is that big transports should have nerfed speed, but it cannot by just purely cosmetic nerf, like only 5m/s less.

After giving it more thought, in my opinion it should be enough to discourage lawful guys in those trains from using holes as valid alternative to lanes, but on the other hand there's need to keep travels to mining fields as not so long. Hence 200 m/s proposal, 250 max. That'd do just fine.
