I personally like the Corvo as it currently stand, it is designed to be a deep space explorer hence the size for the crew and armaments to repel unknown attacks.
I don't understand why an open research ship for civilians still needs "frigate" armaments, its almost like arming an hospital ship when it isn't needed. As an idea, why not reuse one of the transport already instead? Re-role civilian transport ships like serenity or a re-purposed liner if its a mobile research station, or even create a new ship completely for that role ?
For the longest time, I have wanted to pick up a Resheph in order to cruise around Sirius and perform inter-stellar research. However, because of the limitations on the Order ID, I cannot do this as an independent player. Since I don't have the time nor the dedication, or even the interest to join the official Order faction to play for months and months to obtain the rank to fly the cruiser, I can't RP the idea that I want to.
However, I would very much settle for the Corvo, as it is a pretty sleek looking piece of hardware. I think the idea of re-tooling the Corvo into an open use ship would be grand, make it so.

So current model plus a duplicate with ini alterations to hold, infocard and removal of some hard points?
Quote:As it's size is already comparable to (even though slightly larger than) heavy gunboats, the ship can turn into a hybrid of a gunboat and a cruiser - Cruiser shield and regens count, destroyer handling, heavy gunboat hull, a limited number of gunboat turrets along with a gunboat powerplant, as well as two special equipment mounts. This would give the ship a decent survival rate as well as defensive capabilities without making it an offense vessel, and allow it to be reclassified as a civilian gunboat (and so made available for use on any ID), while also keeping its role as a survey ship, and allowing it to be used as a "roleplay platform" for the researcher/explorer types out there.
I realize that this ship isn't supposed to be for fighting (and I can't say I've ever seen it used for that by anyone). However, cruiser size+handling + GB core+guns (which would be less than half of its current core) seems like a huge nerf that would make it pretty useless.
I would suggest, if possible, making its core somewhere between 600k and 1.4m, and leaving it one or two cruiser hardpoints, so that it can still mount a cruiser missile or two.

Thats the point mate. Its meant to be a huge nerf so people don't go crazy with it when it's changed over to civi. If stats were even kept close to the same, it would cause headaches all around.
On topic, I definitely agree. Getting a dedicated research ship that won't cause problems with factions simply because of the ship type would be a great addition to RP.
As a primarily Zoner player, I do like this suggestion. Zoners have two cruisers now, so having now one is fine. But, I also like the idea of having two "similar" models/ships of it. One that remains a Zoner ship, the other being a more open platform.
What if we did some type of RP event or have something in place to explain how this ship is now more open, instead of JUST changing it? If Zoners have had the Corvo for a long time, to all of a sudden change it with no RP/real reasoning, I think would remove some potential RP possibilities. Think of Zoners discussing with various entities to make the Corvo available. They share the plans, and then it becomes more open use. People get what they want AND we get some RP out of it.
