Metagaming has to be done in some small forms like what people have said about maps n' such with the current state of the server [at downtime hours for sure]. That bein' said tho
When people consistently use these small [or not] exceptions to maliciously rendezvous it manifests in the long-term as poor gameplay
When people consistently use these small [or not] exceptions to expedite encounters it manifests in the long-term as beneficial gameplay
So the problem of people of abuse just needs to be addressed when the behavior shows itself. It's unfortunate but this

However, I don't think the server has enough players on it for this to actually work. The player list is responsible for much of the interaction that happens these days, so I fear if we removed the location of players from the player list, it would lead to people rarely interacting outside of New York, and just kill the server even more.
is exactly right.
I'd go for an idea like showing only "regions" of space on the LRS if we went ahead and started combining/cutting systems tho
...which is another massive debate lol

Like what others answered, removing location will make interaction much harder.

Sometimes arguments exist for the sake of just arguing, instead of leading it to something.
Other than that, the idea itself would be fine. But for this server anyway, it really isn't. Or, so I would seem to think.
Though, heck. I probably wouldn't mind if that would happen. Haven't touched the game for a bit, sadly. As my incentive, that's harder to find than a needle in a haystack, seems to be lurking somewhere.
Now... what else. Oh right. I'd have to agree partially with Jack too. But that's such a huge "if", since who is really going to abide to that thought style and who isn't?
Hmm.. I have school the next day. What am I doing? Staying up until midnight and browsing a forum.
All seriousness? I don't even know can you do much about it.
If you can't, then fine.
If you can, then fine.
Just make sure it doesn't kill the whole place. Unless someone wants that...
The problem is not the players list, is when players use it to hunt a certain group over and over. Like when you log a miner and 2 minutes later pirates appear, next day the same thing, and again the next day, until the miner faction dies. Like logging 3 different pirate chars in 3 different systems to try to pirate the same convoy 3 times in a row. And doing it everyday! And both examples I mention here are real, and in both cases the 'offenders' are members of official factions, not even trololol indies...
The solution wouyld be that admins be more harsh with people that do that.
Looking at the players list to find activity to interact with is not a problem if you do not target specific groups cuz of oorp hate...
