Or what I proposed/suggested. It's not THAT out of the realm of possibilities.

From the commodity itself: "These devices control and maniuplaye the intense gravitational fields that are generated by Jump Drives, enabling the creation of a temporary, stable rift in space through whcih a vessel may pass without being ripped apart." I don't see how that could not be applied to a planetary gravitational field and allow for that temporary, stable rift to be how one uses a Docking Ring and lands on a planet.

And really, that's a very simple and a cost-efficient explanation.

A space elevator requires a counterweight of some description on the space end of it. Docking Rings could very well be "the most ergonomic and efficient deisgn possible manufactured by Ageira". Factions that don't have access to them could use a different source of counterweight such as a large enough blob of iridium or an asteroid.
Those red crosses are just way too ugly.
The red crosses can get a new model then. It'd be a temporary placeholder at least.
And a blob of Iridium you say? Time to page The Core C:

Ageira builds gates, but lots of battleships out there can use jump drives on their own. So the technology can't be THAT hard to handle. That could also explain why there are other docking rings.
i don't even think POB JDs are explained in lore. Note I said POB JDs. I've read an infocard saying Kishiro was experimenting with the technology, but I don't think they succeeded in getting it anywhere.

It is the same with these Docking Rings. They do not make sense. Through appropriate changes, we can make them make sense, just like we did with Nomad lore (and other parts of Vanilla that weren't fleshed out).
Welp, you just said that Nomads did not make sense in vanilla because they were incomplete if we are making parallels with what you said about the rings. Incomplete =/= not making sense Lyth, incomplete =/= not canon, Lyth. That's the thing, Hispanic Docking Rings are canon and making sense, I already see nice explanation with the LH in this thread. Probably hispanic rings should have an original design and be a part of original Hispanic tech.

Well just make the crosses invisible AND dock using your solar scanner :v
Aaaaand actually wasn't the maximum amount of systems limited? Like if we were to add a single system (tomionka's internal atmosphere behaves like a separate system in fact) for each base with a docking ring ... I mean it would be awesome to add all the atmosphere gases (nebulas heading deeper below the plane) but it would require a LOT of free system slots and if I remember well amount of systems was limited.
Not only do docking rings look nicer compared to the red crosses, it also provides that not everyone can just enter the planet. Making an open zone accessible for every party would require an increased amount of defense installations around the planet in order to prevent that from happening. Docking rings seem to fulfill that purpose perfectly. Ontop of that, I don't think it takes as much effort to actually build those, considering we're more than 1000 years in the future. About the missing lore regarding it, well, it wouldn't work for already mentioned places such as Malta or Crete if Ageira was the only faction able to produce the parts. There should be a consensus about it at some point that makes it approachable for other factions more easily than when talking about trade lane components etc. Obviously, building docking rings also probably costs a lot of materials and thus makes it so not every small pirate group can build them.

Actually it would make Freelancer look far better with all planets and moons as being "dockable" (or at least ones which wouldn't rekt you after entering their atmosphere ) Even if we were able only to enter their atmospheres not ground level. It would also require some additional work with nebulas representing atmosphere's layers. But it would look just incredibly awesome.
