Wow. You're a much better bomber pilot than I am.
I usually have a bit of trouble (haven't actually pulled if off yet ) killing a gunboat 1 vs 1 in a bomber, and never a cruiser.
In fact, twenty minutes into flinging my antimatter shots at the cruiser's plasma spewing hull I generally get a bit bored and wonder how I might die with grace.
The way I see it is that winning > loosing. Big time. And when winning becomes the sole purpose then things do take a turn for the worse.
In my observation of Disco there are two ways of getting enjoyment out of the game. I assume there are no masochists here.
A) Roleplay
B) Owning in PvP.
But the uber kicks come out of RPing and owning in PvP. That's like the maximum high you can get from Disco.
As I personally suck at PvP (I dream of becoming a good PvPer also) that leaves me only one viable way to have fun is RP and thus I can live with inferior hardware and can and will take ass whooping from ever second guy out there. But that's fine as long as I can get the satisfaction out of the RP.
But everybody needs to feel that he has a fighting chance. But the problems arise when RP is not involved in the events anymore, like a weekly bloodbath. Is running away an viable option in the PvP events? Not really. In those cases the RP is just a front for the main thing. Her the main source of enjoyment comes from winning. In those events the has to be paper-rock-scissors principle in play or else... And if one side always have a sharper scissors, bigger rock and harder paper everybody can really see where that leads.
For random encounters PvP deficits are ok. Not likable but people can live with that. It still makes me cringe inside. That is if the opponent is manly enough to let me run. And that's why I'll gladly have backup.
The bigger the percentage of non-RPers the more PvP oriented the athmosphere is. It's perfectly normal for people (I'm talking about the general mass in the server) to collect up all the guns to ensure maximum probability of a chance encounter with hostiles. The big problem is that RPers let themselves get caught up by the masses with it and let the masses change them and not the vice versa.
Who want's to join a faction when you personally see that you can pwn them with your assortment of cherries? Nobody unless you can show them that there's more to be had than pure ownage.
personally... I'll admit straightforward that I am an absolutely terrible pvper. I could probably remedy that with awesome ships and weapons, but I'm not likely to.
Unless I'm hunting with a pack of allied/grouped players at my side, I try to avoid pvp whenever possible. I will readily try to RP my way out of a bad situation, or simply run if that cant be done. That's one of the reasons i'm pushing this topic so much - nearly every person I run into that's trying to kill me either has some stupidly powerful capship (hey, indie battleships, that's fun) or is set up in a bomber or VHF loaded up with OORP weaponry that gets justified by the rest of the server's players because "they're considered generic items".
Worse than that, when I run into these people there's often little to no RP involved. They dont talk in system chat, they dont give me warning half the time, and they go out of their way to ruin my day. That's one of the things I hate most here... it's awesome when I run into good RP'ers - and i'll admit i'm not one of the best, but every encounter I have with a good RP'er I learn from, and I apply that to my own actions later on. I daresay my own RP talent has increased tenfold in my time here compared to other servers, just because some players are so dedicated to it here.
But there will always be those pvp whores who ignore rules or find loopholes to ruin someone's day, and the only way to get rid of them is for the admins to take action - unfortunately not everyone reports violations, and many of those that do get reported seem to be ignored because the players in question used loopholes to get around the rules.
' Wrote:Sorry for the hijack, Jes, but it's related. People are screaming for indie rights these days. Now, I ask you, what is the point of a faction? What is the point of organizing a force? To employ that organization to further its members goals, in the case of a gaming faction or clan, control, power, influence, etc., in their chosen virtual world. If anybody wants to tell us that our faction can't take a position of authority over the unfactionized players, then why were we allowed to form a faction in the first place? Now do we have double standards?
In other news, I agree completely. When I wrote my original Roleplay for the Fantasia and Perihelion I didn't give a damn about combat edge. I was horrible in anything, period. I wanted to create something unique within the limits of reason and explore the possible scenarios for y characters and their ships. In today's Discovery, if I came fresh off the boat and tried to make the Fantasia today people would accuse me of being attracted by the Bretonian Battleship's combat capabilities and I'd likely be sanctioned or TBFed off the server and forums. Why? Because peoplee are using loopholes to get the best toys. Now I ask you, WHAT is that?
I'm done.
Don't like it ? Then leave! Sounds familiar , ah ? Not very nice when it's pointed at you.
There are only a hand full of clans wich are actlually realy active and privide exelent RP.I will not say there names , I don't wanna get flamed for doing so. Some people don't like receiving direct orders , or sticking to stupid begginers ships and having there fait decided by someone else. No clan deserves my time and attention , not after what I expirienced recently. I and many others feel very comfortable making our own stories , rather then helping yours or anyone elses.

Freelancer, even without the Discovery mod, has quite a few of them for the sake of gameplay.
If you're going to complain about Supernovas being considered generic, complain also about the lack of vertically-oriented systems, the fact that when you kill your engines, you gradually slow down (hint: not a whole lot of friction in space!), the fact that ships catch fire in a zero-oxygen environment... there's a whole host of things to complain about, things that were implimented in various reasons for the sake of gameplay.

Every encounter you have with a good PVP-er you should learn from as well, that will make your RP experience even better.:PBut yeah, PVP without RP is not fun, at all.

There are actually particles in space, plus a little bit of oxygen and other gases that cause friction, not to mention the space junk Earth has put into orbit.

many of those issues are built into the game coding and cannot be changed by this mod's developers.
Weapon and ship imbalances, on the other hand, CAN be changed here. I'm hoping to see semi-equivalent versions of the supernova cannon and others added to many of the major factions in the next version of discovery. At least then these pvp-minded individuals can remain in-RP with their weapon choices.
EDIT:
As for the ships catching fire in space deal... you do realize that you need an environment in your ship to breathe, right? That environment is likely provided by tanks of stored oxygen, which if ruptured -would- bleed off into space, and volatile gasses are more than capable of burning in a void environment - look at the sun (not literally =)
