Ok, so I'm flying a zoner dessie, and my current setup is 2x light mortars, 7x order cruiser turrets.
As it is... the light mortars alone (i.e. firing both with none of the other turrets) take 3/4 of my entire energy bar... that's bad.
I did some simple math, because I dont like complicated math, and discovered that the mortars do more damage per second than razors (2.55x more damage per shot, but half the refire speed) but are less energy efficient than razors (taking 2.7x more energy per shot).
So... I dont want to waste what little money I have left testing this out, and thus I'm looking for opinions on those who have used the weapons.

you simply run out of energy with first salvo.. then you can barely sustain one Light Mortar fire since cruiser powerplants do not have lightning fast recharge as GBs do.
Also you might need the other slots for other guns don't you think?

battlecruiser have quite a good regeneration, not to mention a high base power to use at least a twin light mortar a few times. - but all in all, i d say - mortars are of course nicer, in terms of damage - and sometimes its more important to apply damage to an enemy quick and not efficiently. - but when you re not too sure about your aim, i d take razors.
razors forgive you a missed shot - mortars punish you hard for a missed shot. - on a battleship with their crappy regeneration, you never get your energy back unless you cease fire for quite some time for example. - battlecruisers can regen while firing at least - destroyers and cruisers are a bit short on base energy.
Actually with 2 light mortars you can only fire once, since they each take 500k power, and dessies have 1400k power. And for Zoner dessie i would just take 9 Zoner dessi turret. They do an excelent job.
And tic, i'm using order turrets (as the character is order tagged/id'd) and those are better damage output than the zoner ones, for little additional power.
Was just a bit annoyed that the twin mortars I paid 11m for dont even knock off half of an NPC gunboat's hull =/
