What does democracy mean to you?

I am oppening this thread in order to obtain different points of view and generate a discussion of the modern states, UE and the big nations.
Nowadays the world seems to be less fair for ones and others, war states, war among nations with different ideologies, theists controversies, dictature and democracies still taking part in a partially developed world. What are we living on, then? Democracy state? Dictatures? Monarchy? even Republics?. I want you to check this out now.







These are videos caught on YouTube. Happened yesterday in Catalonia, a small part of Spain who aimed for independency even if the State truely stopped its actions for years. With the new president of the Catalan Region, a referendum was established in order to see what the Catalan society really things about these matter and if they either want to Split from Spain or not. Constitutionally speaking , a referendum is illegal in Spain. No region has the right to decide for an independent state, not even thinking about it. This was a law that kept changing and being derogate over years to clearly cut in any measure these actions.
The images speak for themselves. The people went to vote, peacefully. They WANTED to vote, because its a right overall. That's
exactly what the Guardia Civil (Police of Spain)did to everyone who wanted to vote. You can see the anger on their faces and the pain on families, old people and Young ones, when they were in fact put to look for the ballot boxes and the envelopers with the votes.
President of Spain's words after that: They did what they had to in order to establish the rights of the people and act in democracy.
That's what it means to be part of Europe. That's what it means to have your rights. That's Democracy.

Well you are lucky in a way. Where i am from, people got shot at for agitating. And not just regular police. but Army. We have the AFSPA which is an act that enables the Army to search any house without warrant, to arrest a person on mere suspicion and basically gives them free reign to do anything without repercussion
