So, last night I finally downloaded and installed Discovery Freelancer, however I've got a few technical issues that need resolving. For reference, I'm running Windows 10, 64-bit.
1. I can't save my games, at least not permanently. Whenever I exit the game and come back, any saves I made are no longer there.
2. I can't change the resolution to widescreen, and I don't have any of the antivirus softwhere listed here. The game still runs, I just can't change it to widescreen.
3. I can no longer play vanilla Freelancer - after the intro movie it just changes to windowed with a black screen for a few seconds, then exits.
Not a fun set of issues to have together. Any suggestions? Any additional info I should provide?

Intentional, and related to point 3. The DSLauncher deletes saves to prevent crashing; this is a multiplayer mod.

You cannot do this in game and must use the launcher to configure your desired resolution.

A bug with all Freelancer mods. To fix it, you must go and delete the restart.fl file from My Documents\My Games\Freelancer\Acts\Singleplayer - you must do this every time you want to want to play something that isn't the last mod you played.

Reasonable, but that raises another question - can progress be saved at all while playing single-player? Mine wasn't.

Where do I do that? I didn't see an option for it.

If you want to play Singleplayer, just make another installation of vanilla Freelancer somewhere else and use it for that. Disco & Singleplayer story don't go together. Disco's SP is pmuch a sandbox for testing ships and stuff, nothing else.

3.The mod is independent from your vanilla installation as promised but there's one exception. In your user\documents-folder there exists a folder "My Games" and in that one called Freelancer. If you run multiple mods it's normally safer to rename that folder to something else e.g. Freelancer_Vanilla before you start a new mod this way you don't overwrite information in that folder with information that belongs to the mod. After you have played the mod and want to go back to Vanilla you rename the folder that was made by Discovery e.g. Freelancer_Discovery and the folder you renamed Freelancer_Vanilla only Freelancer. This way nothing gets mixed up. To repair a possible mixup make a copy of the folder for safety and then delete the folder Accts and everything in it. Hopefully Vanilla then will run again.
2. in the EXE folder of the game itself in the mod folder there's a file Hudshift.ini. Try if it fixes your problem if you place it in DATA/INTERFACE instead.
In the folder mentioned above (in 3.) there's a file named PerfOptions.ini. At the end of it there's a Block labeled [Display] the next line should show your display resolution
e.g. size= 1600, 900. What is listed there?
1. I must admit I don't really remember how Freelancer saved the game. But I suspect that happend in the folder mentioned under 3. as well. Try to backup that folder before you close the game. Check if the saves are still in both folders after you closed the games. Check if the games in the folder are deleted after you start Freelancer again. This way you should be able to get more information about the problem.
General question: Did you consider to play the multiplayer? You'd have some interaction and at least the save problem would be solved.
