nah, it takes way longer unless you know perfectly well where to get ore from and where to run it.
From scratch, no knowledge of current meta and trade routes, i used 10 hours, from a Sunburst to a Junker Wrecker (31m).
I had no clue where to buy ore, where to run it, etc.
Sure, i could ask around, and i think i could have gotten further, faster, if i had found a good ore run to do.
But at best, from scratch, brand new player, no knowledge of game, i'd say you need about 7 hours to get a Firefly (39m) 3600 Cargo. From there, you'll easily amass the remaining 120m needed for a 5k'er in just under 3-4 hours of ore running.
Reading about the Helium thing with the buoys in Pennsylvania might've helped.
I understand that this was about a month ago but I just came across this and as a new player I just couldn't help myself.
The cheapest 5ker according to DSCore is the Zoner Transport at 130,000,000. If there is a cheaper one then apologies and disregard.
The time it takes to fill the starter ship (Sunburst) with helium, run to Philly station, sell and then run back to the starting points took me 4.5 minutes. (I did a test run a while back to compare it to another run).
So.
939 (sell price of helium at Philly station x 540 (Hold size) = 507,060 per turn around.
130,000,000 / 507,060 = 256.379 etc rounded up to 257 for extra cash. So that's 257 station visits.
If death from boredom hasn't occurred yet then 257 x 4.5 = 1156.5 minutes / 60 = 19.275 hours.
To make the cash I needed for a shiny Serenity I realized I would have to do around 76 trips.
So I ran the helium to Canterbury station and then Plastics from Planet New London back to Planet Erie for around 4.1 mill sc per 30 min turn around. After 5 hours (longer really because I went sight seeing ) I had myself a brand new shiny Serenity with enough cash left to get her some basic equipment and fill her hold with goodies. Risky because of pirates i know, but I got lucky and it was a lot less boring.

You are better to go to Dublin and get Gold Ore at Clew Bay or BMM-Goldgheist and make 5000 - 6000 profit/unit on the sale at Eire.

Yeah, I know this now but when I started I wasn't aware that you could buy ore from pob's. Discovery has quite a large learning curve.

Sure ,you culd be happy miner and mine 257 times, or you can aplay exploring aspect of game .You can culd have fill your starting Sunburst freighter only 20 or so times, then go to Manhatan, buy your self Mamooth, fill your self with Helium again and start hauling it to place that is listed in helium price list as (to you as beginner curently know) best selling place, which is ,if i am not mistaking , Okinava, sell it for at least 10 M , and then continue from there, Run a few more trips, buy biger cargo ships etc.
This is space trade and explore game after all lol.
Because the leadership got bitter over something and decided to follow the policy of 'if we can't have something, no one can'. Thus they disbanded RM and other factions just to ruin everyone's day for no other reason than they didn't get what they wanted.
It's a little more in-depth than that.
The leadership shut everything down because they felt the story devs were deliberately screwing over Rheinland lawfuls by forcing them into a Sigma war for the benefit of Bretonia, among other things. Let's not get into how the Sigma War came entirely out of left field because of how close Rheinland and Kusari were, down to having 90% techcell on each other's civilian shippies.
(in lore, a Rheinland fighting Kusari isn't a Rheinland rolling up with its now most powerful military in Sirius and eating Bretonia in one fell swoop after Bretonia just barely fends off Gallia by the skin of its teeth)
Rather than play that game, they just took their ball and went on with their lives away from Discovery, disbanding the factions because none of the players in that faction would still be around as that faction.
