Some additional questions that I did not see addressed in the thread.
I die a lot in this game, will I lose this item when my ship is destroyed?
O only have one of these items, can I store it somewhere (like another account)?
Yes you can transfer them to another ship (another character of yours) ^ ^
There is a trade button when you select the other ship, so you transfer items and accept and tada its done
Something we do is create bank characters and keep them in Connecticut, and use trades from your character to someone's to the bank to hold on to things. It does mean you have to have a trusted person to execute that trade with. I've never had a bad experience with strangers doing this, but others have.
