Quote:GBs can and always will have power to destroy cruiser if they are flown by good pilot.
I think that greatly depends on the specific ships involved. My kusari gunboat would never stand a chance going one on one with any cruiser around, but with another similarly set-up kusari gunboat aiding me the two of us stand a good chance at winning against a cruiser.
Quote:Lots of people think that gunboats should be inferior to cruisers, but why? It's called GUN BOAT and it has one really big gun on it. Also, do you remember the sp mission from California where Walker and his fleet were fighting Rheinlanders? Walker says, "These gunboats are too fast for our turrets" and orders all fighters to engage them.
The agility thing is correct, and I remember that mission from SP well. In large numbers, gunboats -should- be able to defeat cruisers, but in a one-on-one situation a gunboat should not have enough firepower to single-handedly destroy a cruiser or larger vessel.
Quote:Destroyer - Should have large amount of firepower. Slower than a Cruiser.
Cruiser - More agile than a Destroyer. Not as much firepower.
The opposite, actually. Take a look at real-life naval vessels - destroyers are smaller than cruisers, and are designed to out-flank enemy ships. They sacrafice firepower to achieve that.
A WW2 destroyer was fast enough to avoid the main cannons on most larger ships, but was equipped with torpedo tubes so they could speed past an enemy cruiser or carrier and do some serious damage to it.
Cruisers, on the other hand - especially modern cruisers - are larger vessels armed to the teeth with cannons and missile launchers.
Right now, the game is correct in how they are balanced against one another - Cruisers have more turret hardpoints than destroyers, and usually have more armor as well - while being countered by having lower manuverability.
I doubt it. Keep in mind that everything else in Freelancer is completely backwards. A transport is larger than a freighter... A Gunship is smaller than a Gunboat (a boat is SMALLER than a ship..)

Well for one, a Gunboat is a naval term where Gunship is a aircraft term.
One refers to a small patrol vessel with several weapons on board.
The other refers to a helicopter.
So yes, in that sense a gunship is smaller then a gunboat.
' Wrote:could the unlawful gbs get a bump in nanobots and batteries to 300?
Scorpion gunboat - 350 bats/bots
Rogue gunboat - 350 bats/bots
Hacker Gunship - 250 bats/bots - it has less hull however, so it doesnt really need as much. The hacker gunship does need a manuverability increase though.
Dragon gunboat - 350 bats/bots
Corsair gunboat - 350 bats/bots
So really, the only unlawful GB that doesnt have over 300b/b is the hacker one, which should be getting an agility boost.

Well i find that hard to do in anything but a corsair gb... perhaps i'm not that good yet..
In any case you're the underdog when it comes to a cruiser...
Another thing that freaks me out is the share diffrence betwen gunboat forward cannons, and let's say supernova... even a mini razor is more powerful than most... why can't this be turned up in to something resonable and really usefull... so you could do bombing runs with your gunboat... khm torpedo runs..
some tweaks here and there and gunboats would be ballanced and right... there are some oddities. Such as Cereb guns they are uterly out of place... why not allow them one lvl 9 cruiser turret...

It is pretty stupid how much more firepower bombers have over even battleships. A single supernova does 138k hull damage for what... 60k energy or something like that? A gunboat forward cannon only does 19k hull damage for 90k energy. Even battleship razors dont do even half as much damage as a supernova and cost more energy.
How is it that a ship with near-fighter manuverability gets a harder hitting gun than the largest and (generally considered) most 'powerful' ships in the game?
hmmm...I thought that all unlawful GBs only had 250 bots/bats. my bad.
And yes, I have taken on a Corsair Cruiser in my Rheinland GB. It helped he had all Solaris Turrets but it can be done. I was pretty battered at the end though.
For all intents and purposes the SN really should have a long**s wait time to refire... Perhaps a minute? That...or make them wait a couple seconds to fire... Make em a missile with no turning... Or not.

the reason it isnt a missile or torpedo weapon is because those are explosive weapons... and explosive weapons have proven to be nearly useless against capships. To even deal shield damage with a torpedo, the explosion radius has to hit the shield generator hardpoint on the target ship - which is usually at the very center of the model, and thus out of explosion range.
