I have one IMG aligned miner flying a spatial which is great fun, he can do some small time mining operations, fight when he wants to, explore and run missions etc......so I decided to make him a "brother" [same family name,IMG tag] in a mining ship who could take over any profitable ventures he discovered and run them on a larger scale....bad mistake...maths/timewise and also ......that mining ship.....sigh...where to begin....OK 20 mills to discover that it constantly emits what sounds like a recording of a steelmill going full tilt during WW2....this wouldn't be so bad if it didn't also handle in space much like a ww2 steelmill with thrusters strapped on, like it has trouble docking with tradelanes even........anyway the first time I took it out and mined in the Colarado silverton field for AAAAAGGGGEEES to fill the hold[almost] the sever crashed or I got a disconnect, whatever, when I got back on the holds were empty and I was floating near the jumphole I used to enter the system......also as someone pointed out for a supposed mining vessle its just totally the wrong shape to be flying through astoroid fields...bouncy bouncy......so I tried again and with some majorly irritating unfunness got the ship as far as california....when approaching Los angeles docking fixture I got bumped by quite a small npc ship and spiralled wildly out of control into the planet atmosphere where I died and lost another full cargo.....all I can say is its a good thing we're not on voice coms here or I'd certainly be banned on the grounds of extreme and colourful profanity!
I was already thinking of trying a gmg gas miner instead but I reckon its the maths/time/prices element that means mining is only fun/profitable on a small scale like my IMG spatial pilot whose mining is mostly RP, a sideline at best. With new people setting out, mining can run a decent profit using smallish freighters but as soon as your hold size exceeds say 2/300 its just vastly more efficent [and enjoyable,pirates/npcs etc] to be trading.....which is a shame.
cant they just make miner-ships get (oh, lets say) 5-10 times more materials per shot?
that would force traders to team up wth the most profitable option: the miner, who gets the
job done 5-10 times faster but cant move as fast as the trader, so he has to team up with him
to make it more worthwhile than him just going trading himself.
yes...make that expensive raw-material thing, materials that are mora expensive and CAN'T be bought anywhere exept mined.

You definitely have something there, that would re-vitalise the entire mining experience.....if only the game engine allows the necessary adjustments....like is it even possible to make the yield from a blasted rock vary depending upon what ship/gun is doing the shooting?Could something be done with the larger rocks, perhaps making them minable only with a special mining turret which can be mounted only on a mining ship?

I feel your pain, i've been flying the mining ship for a while, and it totally sucks to do long distance transportation of goods in. I've flown the beast around siruis a number of times doin trade runs and dealing with reputation garbage. In the end, I decided to park the monster in Dublin. Dangit it sucks but after spending all the time to fill the hold with gold, I end up sellin the stuff at fort hood for bread crusts. I guess its more RP to do that than haulin the stuff in a mining ship to new tokyo or berlin or whatever, but it still sucks.
I considered moving to colorado but for some reason I was under the impression that silverton field wasn't a very IMGish place to be... am I wrong about that? I can't recall the closest IMG base...

Well, I reckoned that Freeport 4 in Magellan worked...an IMG base where the rumour mongers mention it being too close to Liberty space for comfort but theirs nonetheless. My idea was to fly through California and use the jump holes to get to Silverton [a supposedly worked out field] which seemed to fit with a fairly fly by night IMG miner....This worked fine with the Spatial [dashing, scout guy] so I decided to make a new character and do it with the mining ship [9to5 guy]....then the nightmare began....This character, sadly, took off with the family mining ship and sold it, at a massive loss, on a junker base....when last seen he was flying a collector and "mining" scrap....... He may well buy "false papers" on manhatten and change his name out of shame.
Seriously though maybe the GMG gas miner would work better? Apparantly its often used as a transport and the IMG/GMG friendly relations would seem to make it RP acceptable....I didn't try one 'cos I was afraid of ending up with another huge clunker.
Hey everybody...I'm kinda new and I was wondering if someone knew of a mining site that was better than the one I'm about to list. I've come to discover that in Omega-15 you can mine right next to a station. These objects drop anywhere up to 50 units of scrap metal and they sell for 500 credits a unit at the station. If you have a cargo ship that carries 2000 units, that's an instant 1 million credits right there....
....So if anybody knows of a better mining spot, please let me know.

Thanks
thats not mining, thats being a junker.
