Yeah, so, one of Fletchers posts got me thinking about the neural-net again today & it reminds me that to the best of my recollection, during all my time here so far, I've never brought this topic up publicly.
What is the tech that drives the N-N to you?
For years now, I've Rp'ed the N-N as a brain-based wireless connection...yet on occasion I still get some guff from people when I play it that way.
I figure now is as good a time as any to invite someone...hell,anyone to show me specifically the places where it's written that it's not.
Now...I'm not one to interfere w/ the RP of others so long as they don't interfere w/ mine & I'm a huge fan of doing your own out-of-the-box sorta thing...but let's talk about this for a spell, yeah?
If you recall in the original campaign it gets treated quite differently. News reports on "TV", scanning the artifact on a computer, etc. If it was neural there'd be some indication throughout the story. Which is stupid, since it's called NEURAL net.
Call it whatever you like, but the actual name for it is the Neural-Net...which to me, more than suggests neurons...& that alludes to brain activity.
Just a quick bit of background as to my stance:
Every character who flies in space on the server is chipped in the head at some point in their life in order to access it, run their ship & communicate with others...those who aren't, have to hack in mechanically somehow.
My oldest character was chipped against his will as a kid & his resistance during the install has resulted in strong headaches ever since then whenever it's activated. It may (on the surface) seem like a minor thing, but It actually defines the personality of my Gaian on multiple levels.
Imagine what your life would be like right now if you've always got a painfully throbbing headache everytime you got online & posted or skyped.
You'd be alot different than you are right now.
::Edit @ Kikatsu: of course it's a plot device:lol:I tend to use those alot because my characters have an actual life & don't define their entire existence by spending 100% of their time sitting in the cockpit of a ship.
I also boast (arguably) the coolest, most unique watering hole within the entire community...so yeah, I'm all about plot devices:P::

the Neural part of the word could be taken two ways.
One being actually in the brain, the second being metaphorical. Like the World Wide Web is like a spider's web, with lines linking up all over the Earth to provide us this connection, the Neural Net indicating that it is much more complicated, being over an entire sector of systems with hundreds of planets rather than just the one.
I like to think it's a little bit of both. I've always seen it as something that's implanted into your brain, but I've also RPed it that you can access your neural net via logging into a terminal.
It could be a collaboration of the two sides of the coin in Freelancer, or even the future. The human brain is a treacherous thing, and I'm unsure if we're completely able to use it on the level of "in-brain-connection". What I assume it is that there could be a chip implanted into or onto the human body, that acts as a human transceiver as a back-up over traditional means. We have a habit of being quite conductive.
As for the neural net, I'm torn in what it is. One part of me thinks that it is a network of computers linked together via organic threads, this is backed up by infocards of optronics in-game; they're much more efficient at transferring data across large distances. They're topographic layout may also take notes from what we understand of the brain, relaying bandwidth like neurons in our heads.
The other part of me agrees with Marburg, that there are chips in our brains, and we can directly access large amounts of information, possibly with HUD or head-pieces designed to translate the data; while our brains relay requests instantaneously, or even through speech recognition. However, I see little incentive over cheaper, and more reliable means with the good old mash the keyboard or holo-board approach.
I'm undecided as to what, but both sides are very possible, at the same time even. It all depends what road was adopted in each place. Different Houses, may call for differing technological approaches. Or widespread adoption of one main technology. Who knows?
