I didn't find any settings to limit the total upload size. That's why I disabled it completely.
Is there a way to enforce the size to be around 5 megs, or 10? Is there a way to easily delete images from pages (not just code, but images from host)? If yes, then I might try.
Also make sure the 'uploads' or 'images' directory is writable by the web server (chmod 777). I doubt the max upload size can be set over 2mb without modifying the server settings. It would work if Apache and PHP is set to allow uploads higher than 2mb, but I will leave that to the webserver admin. 2mb IMO is more than enough for images.
Ok, done that... guess that you can try, although I don't see how it controls the maximum total size of all uploads. Also, do you need PNG really? Those files are larger than other types.
Well, that depends really. You see, PNG files are good for vector graphics. The file is significantly smaller than JPGs when it comes to vectors, so yes I believe it should be left in. Each of these file formats is specifically good for one thing or another. Also, perhaps add SVG (scalable vector graphics) to that too, since it works out really good with resizing among other things.
I'm willing to 'police' our wiki image sizes and formats.
I've had extensive experience with Photoshop, and have worked as a web and print designer at a Graphic Deisgn Studio.
Seriously, all 800x600 pics or thereabouts (which i would imagine is sufficient for any large pic we want,) can be about 500k-1mb depending on the individual pic.
If I spot any larger than reasonable I can pull them down, and reformat them to be a more suitable filesize or format.
Blodo's thing will work fine, and I'm just adding my two cents.
