Oh lighten up Morgan, you and I both know that was quite amusing considering the current state of political affairs on Malta.

I stand by my earlier, logical in my view, assertions on the subject of user cloaking.

What political affairs? The neutered Council sits on its haunches bickering about internal affairs whilst the military does whatever it sees fit.

User cloaking is insane and nearly impossible to balance unless we wanted to devote an entire mod version to it (which we don't. Not unless everything becomes perfect and we get bored enough to spend six months on a single gimmick). But whatever. You people have your dreams whilst the rest of us go and do something worthwhile.

First of all, stop belittling other peoples opinions. Second of stop saying "we", it refers to collective mass, and in this context that mass would need to have reached a state of consensus on the matter, which evidently we haven't if there are so many people talking about it. Granted you can argue that you have the majority of the vote.

And, unless things have changed since I last flew an Outcast Malta exists in a highly controlled state of government run by a small collective of economic leaders who set all law and all stance for the entirety of the Maltese people. Military service is paramount to the "defense" of their home, as they see it. Or I should say, as they are told to see it.

Actually, back reading for a moment you've summed it up quite nicely, Malta exists in a state of pseudo-military control with a civilian figurehead council sitting high. I'm not here to argue this point though, I'm simply explaining my viewpoint to you darling.

I feel, as others have said that with time and effort cloaking could be implemented and balanced, and yes it would take a great deal of work. I see enormous RP potential, but that can't be either realised or dismissed as the matter has never been field tested, so how do we know how it would affect Discovery? We don't, and we can't unless we test it. Anything else would be supposition based on previous events on different servers, something I don't hold highly as credible evidence to the downfall of an idea.

Why have you chosen to ignore my post in its near entirety?

' Wrote:Actually the best thing to do is to actually add a fully workable cloaking device that would render the ship invisible. But making it ONLY admin aproved and given. I see absolutly no harm in such a thing , in the hands of the right people it would severly aid RP.

Also , the abcence of a cloaking generator removes the cherry from the top of the ice-cream , methaporicly speaking , on the Osiris Battleship and the Order as a whole.

I have no idea why a person like Igiss would be so much against such an improvement.
Rheinland capital ships were also cloaking in sp. Now imagine, a cloaked RH battleship = BIG "NO".

It comes down to this.

Cons:
It can be balanced but it is a lot of work.
If it were balanced, people would still whine about it.
You'd have more people clamering for admin-approval.
Elitism.

If it isn't admin-approved then it will be overused. There currently aren't any ship classes that could use a cloak and not be overpowered.
6 Bombers may have no energy after decloaking but they can always dodge and take down the capitals anyway. The capitals defense is avoiding the bombers to begin with.
Slight tangent.

Pros:
RP oppertunities.
New battle tactics (Uncloak and stab the enemy in the back)

Facilitating the rise of robotics since 0 A.D.

As a supporter of Turk's view that there is no reason not to just simply discuss it...

I have only played with cloaks on Tekagi's but they are not the "great unbalance" everyone assumes.

There they are "hard coded" to the specific ship--no removable cloaks that can be transferred and apparently this helps differentiate cloak mod cheaters too.

The delay time before cloaking and de-cloaking begins and the amount of time to reach full in|visibility is variable and can be set as the admins determine.

Guns do not fire while cloaked and additionally, guns can be left not fireable for a variable period of time after de-cloaking completely.

So the server-side controls do most of that and are set by admins.

There it is "second string ships" and just a few with cloaks and there is a substantial delay before guns can fire.

Throw the single-player cloak version out. You have to chose ships to be practical. It shouldn't be "all" or all the ones SP allows.

The Arrow and Spatial would be two good choices for cloaking ships here (I think).

Downside is it can cause a problem if not set up properly and it does allow people to spy, fly and trade unmolested for the most part.

Mines will 'track" to a cloaked ship and that's one way to find it. bullets still hit it and if you look carefully firing you can sometimes find them.

Gatelanes and system gates and docking rings still open and close and light up--so its a giveaway.

They show on long range scanners but not in system--except for a split second when you enter and leave a system.

The sound effect is very cool and it fades pretty much like you saw in SP.

not advocating them here just explaining what I know of how they work. One thing I don't know and have been curious about is if energy use can be used with them so they "run out" if you don't have enough power. if so, heck they are very practical.

Even if we can't play them its fun to think about some.

Well, that seems to lend credibility to the notion that cloak is not the end all be all of the destruction of balance as we know it. Ultimately the call is that of Igiss but if we can prove it works why can't we as a community also as for the feature we're looking for.

That's assuming we can create a proper and credible proposal. Now mind you this is all hypothetical, I entered this conversation with the direct inclination of shooting down those who shoot down others. Its exactly conversations like these that lead to developments and enhancements, and when you stop having them and start dismissing concepts talked of before its my feeling you're breeding resentment and stagnation. Just something to think about.

a guide to disco-speak

They say:

1. we tried <something similar> before and it didn't work

2. <your suggestion> will seriously unbalance pvp/trading/whatever

3. <insert deity name here> is dead-set against it

4. go play on <other> mod if you want cloaks/tie-fighters/humorous ships

They mean:

1. i can't see the difference between your suggestion and the one that was flamed to death last month

2. this will mean that my corsair gunboat/adv train will be a waste of money

3. I am dead set against it, but i'll use an authoritarian argument so my opinion carries more weight

4. we don't like change around here, bring back vanilla!
