I'm sorry..I dont know how this got in here. I posted this in a ship design thread... not the cloaking one.
Ignore this. And that post. In this thread.

we don t even have cloaks, we have a CLEAR denial of cloaking devices even.... and still we argue so much about it.
i am VERY much against cloaks of ANY kind now. - the gap between the "established" community members and the "no name, casual player" is already quite big in terms what is allowed and what not. - many a casual players are yelled at what established players take as their "privilege". ( ships, equipment etc )
furthermore, i dont see MUCH difference in ingame roleplays of the very established factions and the casual player to justify superior equipment. it would be detrimental to say point blank that ... for example "the phantoms should have it for their superior RP" ( is invokes questions of various kinds )
in general - not a single faction "deserves" such a device, cause no faction has really shown the responsibility needed for an item that can destabilize the balance of powers. - i agree with epyon that any cloaking device will cause MUCH more trouble than provide benefits for any roleplay.
it would be easiest to *forget* about cloaking in general. - it is not possible... and since it turned out that we cannot RP it... we should really really consider that its not possible at all. - so we are not even tempted to RP it.
i think that the only ships that should be able to cloak and NOT cause any balance nightmare are unarmed ships. - so i wouldn t have a problem with cloaking devices with nice effects - if it was limited to ships with NO weapons and - possibly..... NO shields at all ( PURE high end scout ships for RP only.... every player, no matter how superior the factions RP is tempted to exploit a cloak for pvp... only if cloaking ships are fully and 100% unarmed they are really used for roleplay )
but there we are - the camera ship can be used for that task.... .invisible to the eyes its hardly ever used for RP operations as a forward scout for raids. - so i suspect that any cloak that is asked for will be used for pvp rather than RP.
so i d say - make the camera ship a visible ship with a neat cloaking effect when it needs to ... and leave it the only ship that can cloak. - give it a trial maybe... and look how many people will RP with it.
Well , if HYPOTHETICLY SPEAKING , I've spend 2-3 years on Discovery , wrote alot of great RP stories and RP'ed many of them in game. I'm a proud member of alot of clans and people know my name. Why should I not have some priviligess that reflect my expirience in the RP light of the server's comunity ? And why should I be looked at just like the regular new member , when I've spend SO much of my time here.
Jinx , Eppy - Why do you speak for all members ? Why do you think people don't deserve such a think ? In the RIGHT hands it will NOT disbalance ANYTHING , because the person who has it CAN be trusted with it.
Jinx - Why should I (for example) forget about it ? It's part of the game's mechanic it's part of a faction , it has been seen in the game and it still SHOULD exist. At this time , I only RP a cloak ( wich doesn't make ANYTHING in RP value , bacause no matter how many times I hurt my fingers writing on the key-bord that I'm doing something that the game mechanic doesn't alow I just get atack and killed. Even if I should be cloaked , I'm still atacked with little to no RP )
i m not speaking for the whole community. - i said that igiss has clearly said "no" to it. - and that i ... personally ... support this.
i do see more problems than i see benefits. - but really that is just me. - cause i believe that such power will be abused for pvp rather than supported for roleplay.
i see it with the camera ship. - if cloaking alone was what people wanted for roleplay... the camera ship would be used MUCH more for RP than for just ooc picture taking. - but i don t see it used for scouting or any operations that require to be invisible.
hence my followup that i believe that people do not want a cloak along, but a cloak on a ship that can fire. - which makes me think that they will use it for an advantage in pvp, rather than RP. i do know and i can imagine the RP potential of a cloak, but for me ( me alone ) - the dangers and the risk of such an ability more than outweighs the benefits.
players - no matter how determined - seek advantages. - that starts with factions that enjoy greater pvp freedom ( which is a great potential for better RP, too - but often enough, it comes down to pvp matters ) - and goes on to ships and equipment. - how many non dragons fly a blood dragon for example, although the ID card expressly states that the ship is NOT passed to non dragons or ex-dragons? - how many respected players have RPed around that limitation? - how many dragons use other weapons than their own ( infernos / krakens ) although it was said more than once that such equipment unbalances the ship and is not "meant to be like that"?
players find their ways - and i don t mean the casual players, but its more the players that are respected here that enjoy more freedom in their roleplay.
i simply do not TRUST the playerbase to handle a device like a cloaking device with the responsibility needed for it.... but it is MY own opinion - i do not speak of the whole community - i would still say that if i was standing all alone. - and i can of course be wrong with my opinion ( for example, i was very much against xoria as an admin, but it turned out that he is up to the job and did NOT at all show what i was afraid would happen if entrusted with power - so i was wrong there )
you are free to have and defend your own opinion, any time, any way. - but i am sure you allow me to have mine. - IF a cloak was introduced, and IF everything was perfectly fine, you can point your finger at me and say "i told you so"....
I've experimented with RPing a ship with a cloak, and using a nearly identical name for a camera ship. That way, the ship can have a 'cloak', yet not be using the device itself.

this - for example is a great way to RP a cloak. i would just like to know how many would really roleplay a cloak - and how many would rather use it to gain an advantage in pvp. - for the most part, its a mixture of both, for sure....
but what if:
- cloaking a ship was possible, but the bigger ( hitpoints ) a ship was, the longer it would take. - say.... 30 seconds for a fighter, 5 minutes for an osiris.
- the whole time the ship is in cloaking / uncloaking process, it would stand STILL, the shields would be DOWN ( like vanilla ships that open the hatch ) and all energy was drained dry.
- the cloaking process, once started could not be interrupted.
THAT would be how i d see a balanced cloak. - a ship would need to be extremely vulnerable for at least half a minute up to 5 minutes when attampting to cloak or uncloak.

I just don't like this idea of cloaking at all. Whether you like it or not, it would make the space much emptier. Everybody would prefer to travel cloaked.

I was never against limitation like this.
