As one of those numbered friends I can confirm this happened - I was the person who was harassed with Cruise Disruptors and eventually attacked for flying a Junker CSV - despite the fact that I had enough faction to purchase the thing from the Junker Base, so the NPCs clearly didn't have anything wrong with it. I spoke with him IC first, then OORP while trying to get away from Captain Cruise Disruptor and was eventually rewarded with seeing how many nice pieces my new ship full of cargo made when he blew it up.
I've also ran into some really massive aggravation on the fault of the Libery Police, some of my friends more than others, whereas I have encountered "you're a pirate, BOOOOM, laugh about it in System" from the =LSF=. While I understood going Pirate was a KoS type tag, I wasn't aware I would get taunted afterwords instead of getting some engaging, interesting roleplay for it. I mean, I'm in an executioner popping NPCs to help a friend get Rogue faction and suddenly I'm beset by three Gunboats and not a single word of "stop" or any roleplay that would have amused me and made me more than happy to accept my fate there, just a rain of laser fire. I've honestly yet to see anyone Roleplay with a pirate who is not bigger than them.
Laser fire does not = RP.
Then we have rather arbitrary restrictions on the way pirates do business and what weapons we can carry, what ships we can fly - we're PIRATES, we shouldn't really need a pass to say that we stole a ship, it's kinda what we do. Or then again, on this server, it's not. The Pirate rules on how to handle traders force us into saying "2mil or dai" as the plague has been known, whereas the entire server has free reign to blast us into oblivion with zero RP?
Do. Not. Want.
The player factions in their entirety seem to be more focused on consolidating their power and hoarding their systems than actual RP - Even if there is RP on the forums or not, that's what I see in game. Especially the Player Navies and Player Police are very concerned with "who owns what Capital ship" and "who has my permission to be in System X" This is the sort of thing I think of a political dictator doing, only this time they're aligned with someone who can remove you from the planet (server). I think there would be less power inherient in many player factions if the Admins didn't run these large, overbearing, powergaming factions who try to consume independant players and remove rights.
Even if it doesn't exist, there's a clear reason for people to see a conflict of interest. In fact, this server seems very much intent on maintaining a status quo where certain people have power, making it very hostile to new players.
And that is why I and my friends who came along with Hatred felt the need to go elsewhere. And I do not think we were the first who were disgusted in this vein, and if things do not change, I do not think we will be the last.
I have nothing to say to that. I think you are correct.
That's partly what this thread was about - a plea to the community to change.
This thread wasnt really aimed at new people who dont know what Discovery is about,
(but they can take inspiration / correction out of it if they wish), it was aimed at the people
who have been here for long time, but still ATTACK and JUDGE other people's
roleplay. It was aimed at the people whose first instinct is to yell 'OORP' when
someone comes up with an interesting idea. It was aimed the people who think
that they can 'Play Admin' and 'Rule lawyer' when they have no authority nor right
to say anything, they cannot do anything. It was aimed at the people who dont realise
what they are doing when they scream OORP, when its none of their business and
give nothing constructive to say. All of us are at that point at one time.
However if I could name a few reasons why you have had a bad experience.
1. We have had an influx of new players, many of whom seem to have come from pvp servers.
2. You stayed in New York
3. You still have not been around long enough to see the gold.
4. You will get that crap no matter where you are and what game you are on.
It just takes on different forms and isn't so obvious in other gameforms.
I'm sure if you guys have stayed together for awhile, you would have seen
the same 'griefing' that every game has in some form.
To give up and leave when you first get some opposition is, well, simply put not good for you.
5. Some people think that static roleplay is good. I'm not one of those.
Dynamic roleplay is best as it comes alive. But people seem to get stuck
in their own thinking of what roleplay is. I and some others are attempting
to change that, but it's difficult.
Would you believe that, and I think I can safely say this for every single person
that I know of and have met on the forums and ingame in Discovery, we know
what you mean. We have had the same experiences of harrasment, griefing,
being pvp abused - just because insert reason here, etc.
And I can tell you that if you let it bother you then you wont last long, because
there is a lot of it. But for me, that piece of gold that I find is worth all the grief I get.
Think about that for a minute.
I love Freelancer and have for years. When I found this community that I can
finally roleplay being my pirate/trader/ - even if ingame the characters I interact
with are bitter enemies, I do not carry that onto the forums or skype. It's what you
want out of Discovery and Freelancer that you will get. It's what you put into it.
Give good RP. Ignore the rest. You will get good RP in turn.
It's entirely your choice of course. You can come and go as you please.
The door is open the invitation is there to stay, to discover the gold.
It's your move next. What are you going to do?
If you want to leave, then leave. No-one is keeping you here. If you are curious
about that gold then stay. PM some people, noobl3te or me and ask to get some
RP out of us. I think most of the active people here on the forums do roleplay
fairly well. There is a large part of the ingame players that don't care about
roleplay, and there is nothing we can do about them except -TRY- to get them onto the forums.
But at the end of the day if they want to continue PVP abuse then they will get sanctioned,
and either, learn, continue getting sanctioned, or move on.

The forums themselves are a river of flotsam with occasional eddies where amusement may gather. 90% of the threads I've seen have devolved into arguments based on "no your RP is wrong!" between one group and another.
I can't really see why most of the group would want to stay around at this point. It may be possible to pan for gold, but I'm not sure it's worth doing so in polluted waters.

Wow. I am truly lost for words.
Kudos.
I'm sorry to see you leave because of such actions.
If you ever come back or decide you want to stay PM me and I'll help out.:)
heh. I'm one of the group that Hatred mentioned - he'd told me about this thread a few days ago, but I've been otherwise distracted from coming to read it. I might be convinced to stick around, but only because I want revenge.
My events of the first day here? I fly with my buddy Malice up to get his new Junker CSV - I'd been busy trying to find and get a copy of the game to come play with my friends, because, really, space combat/trading plus roleplay plus persistant servers? Sold, and more than. - in my Starflea because hey, he's got some cash, and I don't, but I'm having a ball just flying around shooting scrap metal. It's entertaining as crap. We get up to Rochester and Malice flies in, and I hang outside and wait, potshotting floating scrap metal bits. I hear something flying up behind me and holy crap, it's a battleship. (Whether it's a "battleship" quote unquote or not I really don't know, and really don't care - it's a hundred times my size, bristling with guns, and looks pissed. I'm still not sure on what's classed a battleship and what's not.)
The guy inside it, a Junker, begins harassing me. 'What are you doing here? Why are you here? You're not supposed to be here, this is a secret base for listening to transmissions from Planet Manhattan!' Now, at the time, I'd never played the single player game, but now having done so, I was pretty sure that the Junkers welcomed everybody to come visit their bases because they're sort of poor and indigent and looking for money, sort of an intergalactic clearing house. But back to the story.
Anyway, I sort of brush the guy off - it really doesn't seem to matter to me, I mean, we're what, level 15? 20? I'm trying to just raise enough money to not be flying a leaky bathtub and I'm looking forward to Malice having a better ship, since we're mostly pooling any money we get to buy better ships and equipment for one another, the rationales being that we want to stick together, and when we're all in decent ships, we can play together, instead of 6 Starfleas and 1 Holy Crap That's A Big Ship. As soon as Malice comes out, the Junker starts raising holy hell about him flying the ship. I don't think anything of it - the rest of the group's meeting somewhere else, and besides, as far as I understood, as long as we're under level 30, there's not jack he can do to us, right? Soon as I turn away, I hear Malice yell out over Ventrilo "He shot me!" I target him in the menu and sure enough, Malice's shield is gone. By this time, I'm already in warp out towards Manhattan, and my parting comment in System Chat: "Geez. I always thought the Junkers were reasonable, but the local guys seem to be a bunch of dicks."
Dicks. Note that word, it'll be important at the end of the story. Also, raise your hands if you think it's vulgar.
This seems to really piss off the Junker, but by now we're for the most part moving along. Another Junker is talking to the aforementioned one, and we're flying off towards Texas or something - someone's mentioned that they want to try a boron/beryllium trade run, and we should all do it to raise some money. That's cool, I've never seen Texas or anywhere else before for that matter. And off we go.
It's pretty peaceful and a lot of fun for a while. We'd been shooting police and the Rogues were more than happy to let us pass through, well, most of us. We get through Magellan, we move down towards Leeds, and as we're going past some base or something somewhere in Leeds who do we hear in System? Mr. Junker and Mrs. Junker, from earlier! Somebody says something to them from our group, there's a laugh over Ventrilo, and we continue - until halfway through the system, Mr. and Mrs. J show up behind us at a base. They're both in battleships (no, I don't know what KIND. The kind with a hojillion guns and ePeens far out of proportion.) OK... Hatred says just to head out, and we're on our way to the jump gate.
I'm last through. I'm a little slow moving at times, I've got AIM open, I've been reading while we're in formation, so I look up just after the rest of the group goes through the jump hole. Mr. J is talking to me. "Halt and drop ure cargo" I could've told him to piss off, but I figure eh, I'll ignore him.
Next thing I know, I hear "Incoming Missile!" and WHAM, Cruise Disrupted, and there's a streak of green across my back. My shield is gone, most of my hull is gone. I panic for a second, and rapidly jam on the Nanobot/Battery buttons, going into and out of Turret Mode at least twice. ONLY AFTER THIS does Mrs. J say 'crap, level 29, nm.'
Now. I admit. I have a little bit of an anger issue. So that sort of explains why I exploded, both in Ventrilo and into System chat. I make a point to put the // into System Chat and go off on him, asking him what the hell he exactly thinks he's doing, I'm level 29 (I made a POINT to be level 29 and will continue to be level 29/39 as long as I can stand to be), I have a civvy tag, and I call them both M***** F*****s. Yes, in System Chat. His response? "oh you can't talk to me like that i'm gonna report u". I tell him to go right ahead, I want him to report me, I'm looking forward to it. I've got screenshots of my current level, his own screenshots sent in to the admins will show him in a battleship, I'm looking forward to it. Of course, at the time screenshots were the farthest thing from my mind - I was too busy blowing my top to the rest of the Vent crew. 'i'm gonna get u banned' Yeah, right. Jerk.
I take off, and at this point the rest of the group is actually on their way back through the systems. I'm so lost and mad it takes me another 20 minutes to figure out where I'm going, and I take the same gate back and forth twice before I recognize what I'm doing. Finally, I get over it, and I'm ok. I'm cool. It's the next day, I'm having fun, shooting police and transport, snarking at the LN and LPI in NY over System, scaring the crap outta some level 32 police dude who opens fire on me when I shear off his shields in a second long burst of fire, and I admit, I'm having a good time. I'm a pirate, and proud of it.
Next day, same stuff - until later that night, oh, dammit, server crashed again. .... No, wait. ... Well, hell. I'm banned.
This is where that question about dick comes into play. I don't consider it vulgar - a little rude, perhaps, but more indicative of a state of annoyance. Rules state you get a 7 day ban for vulgarity. I check the boards the next day, when whomever it was who banned me finally got around to posting about it, and I'm out for 14. hmph. fine.
.... You know, I was thinking earlier about coming back and playing more, but after writing this, I'm not sure if I will. I've got Mass Effect to play, I've got WoW to play, I've got City of Heroes, Elona, Combat Arms, TF2, I've got writing, roleplaying, I've got my dogs to play with, there's TV to watch - I don't have to play Freelancer to enjoy myself. It's fun, but.. (And another thing. Y'know how people fuss about how many noobs there are in NY space? It's because it's frigging SCARY anywhere else! You wanna be a pirate, like me, from the beginning? Three words: Bounty Hunter Barracudas. *tremble* 4 of them, 2 Piranhas, just outside a warp hole? I was dead before I finished undocking. I don't want to have to trade for a month to scrape up the money for a giant ship before I can start PLAYING, but going outside of Liberty Space in anything less than a $500,000 ship is suicidal.) I don't want to play somewhere where people can manipulate the rules and 'play favorites' however they want, and especially for new players (not just to Discovery, but to the game!) who're trying to figure out what the hell they're doing and have some fun, well.. it just ain't fun.
Not that I didn't meet some awesome people, though. Warspite, looking at you, dude. Cool enough to cruise past me while I'm kicking the crap out of LPI fighters at the NY->Texas warp gate in that big ship and actually RP with me. (Well, threaten me not to fire on him, but still, that's how you're supposed to do it. Check the level, check the tag, hail them, THEN decide to open fire. I replied back, said I hadn't thought of it, safe journeys, and we talked a couple more times while flying around.) But really. One or two people I like and the rest of the crew (who've all had their moments that've turned them off) vs. the NY/LN/LPI community? Nope, sorry, not interested.
And don't even get me started on the rest of the crap I've seen going around. Hatred's bit on 'we're pirates. we'll fly pirate ships, but we're using what guns we get.' This is obvious. Minimal's piece on 'RP =/ "2 mill or dai"'. Yes. The guy in the battleship/cruiser/whatever it was who chased me through the NY->NY Buffalo warp hole just to shoot me, then DEMANDED that I leave the area multiple times but sat on top of the jump holes so I couldn't get out, and was threatening to report me? Yeah. Hope that did a lot for you, buddy. Nope. The only reason I'd come back would be to have one of those billion-credit battleships specifically so I could turn Rochester into a parking lot. Then I'd leave, and be happy. As it is, I'll probably leave and be happy anyway.
You guys dont seem to be getting the point.
We've all been there. Some of us have even done that.
We've stayed because we have found the gold.
Now either make up your collective minds about leaving or staying,
but stop hijacking my thread on your grievances.
Theres nothing I can do about it, other than posting a thread like this
in the hopes that those people who read it change their behaviour.
As for the guy that you blew your top at, he was being a dick.
Is that any reason for you guys to leave after, what? 1 month of playing?
Grow a thicker skin, play for 6 months, finding the people who DO RP,
THEN come back and tell me there is no one roleplaying on these servers.
Liberty is especially bad for OORP and OOC, but thats no reason to leave the server.
Just move to some other area that interests you. And Liberty IS getting better, have some more patience.
By the way, actually having played singleplayer will help you guys to get the backstory of Disco.
I look forward to Greed posting.

Obviously it's Dick and Jane. I don't know why you got sanctioned for it.:P
But really, you don't need a big ship to be happy. A good fighter is more than ample, although you seem to have gotten the short end of the stick. Liberty is filled to the brim with... *cough* Cap-lovers.
Please don't leave. You guys understand what RP is. You guys abide by it (albeit still have room for improvement) but you're a welcome sight from the rest of the "Lolwutt"-ing noobs who bombard our server.
Mine silver in Colorado sell it on Manhattan.:PThat's a good start.
Heck, I might even donate to you guys if I see you again. You all seem like a nice enough lot who ran into the wrong crowd.
I really hope you don't leave! You all could offer alot to Disco. But this is a selfish representative of the community wanting to better it. Which makes me sound somewhat like a politician, but thats what Big Brain Academy said I was, so who knows?:P
Don't leave! We need good people!
-Edit- Ooh, right. I just clicked and read. Probably not the best thread for this... *cough*
I just thought of something.
PM some people here on the boards asking for some RP ingame.
I'm sure someone could organise something.
I'm willing. I know some others that RP.
Noobl3t, Gromath, JihadJoe, Titan, Tenacity,
um....some others... go to the members search and pick someone.
Actually scratch that. better to look on the forums in the Roleplaying forum.
Pick someone who you think might suit your style.
I'm verbose, usually, and willing to talk.
MB25 is a good roleplayer. Gafmm, Xing, sheesh...i can't name them all theres so many.
Sovereign Wrote:Seek fun and you shall find it. Seek stuff to Q_Q about and you'll find that, too. I choose to have fun.
Let me rephrase that, Junker + BS + OORP I like big ships = idiot.
My entire equation was flawed... I over-generalised. Sorry.
-Edit- ... Although I'm not entirely sure an Adv. Battlestar is the best choice, but there aren't alot of choices. I just don't really like Junkers in BSs in general... Mayhap a mining ship, but... Anyways. As long as you aren't shouting, "LOLWUT?! U Pwn meh rochestr as teh below lvl 30? U suk, lolz! *PEW PEW*" I'm alright with you.

Noted.
I offer you cash and membership in my clan if you want it.
However, I won't tolerate swearing in system. (I, nor any others in the clan will really care about it in private or group, as long as it's not continuous or too prolific.)
