The events regarding territory changes would all be subject to admin opinions of course. If they see the corsairs raping everything left right and centre in UNFAIR fights, then they could intervene. However if the battles were fair but the other side simply lost, then little cause to intervene.
I don't know about you but a new news report every year seems a bit little. Does Sirius stand still for a year or what?

At any rate, personally I quite like the idea of an auto-updater. It'd keep the news flowing, though as said, there should be some way to prevent entire factions from just being destroyed. It'd add a bit of unpredictability and the ability to change things in the universe as players...yes from me if possible.
Bad idea very bad idea . This kind of auto-update could bring viruses into your computer while updating the mod. It happend to me on other server who used this kind of update. I`m not going to tell the name of the server.
ANY kind of update could bring viruses into your computer.
This is just like downloading a tiny patch every week.
The only difference between this and a manually downloaded patch is that it saves hassle for everyone.
And for those who can't see the TLR thread:

This software connects to an ftp server and downloads and installs a mods files into your game, although designed with Freelancer in mind, it can be used to install mods into any game, program etc.
This package comes with 2 install programs, the client side; Auto Updater V2, and the admin/server side AUF Writer program.
If your a player on a server and wish to use this software connect your server administrator over configuring your server to use this software.
Features:
Auto-Updater V2
-Started first by the player, so it can check for updates,it then allows the game/program to be started from the Updater (also allows the use of command line parameters, -s for example)
- Server news
- Uninstaller for any files the updater has installed
- Installed files listings
- Auto or manual checking of files
- Allows multiple patches to be downloaded and installed in the correct order of version number.
AUF Writer (Server side)
- Writes the files for configuration of ftp server
- Allows manual adding of filename, and relative installation path
- Allows the automatic adding of a single file, or an entire directory. Been tested with a mod containing over 4000 files without problem
- No limits to the amount of patches/mods for files. Been tested with over 200 mods each with 4000 files.
- Area for adding of server news.
- It copies each file you add (except manual add) to an AUF mod folder and then writes the files needed, so all the files you need to upload are in one location with the correct directory structure.
Let me know if your server uses it, and if you have ideas for future releases.
Well, this is indeed feasible. You can have the updater on a second machine, even a slow one (like... an old P4 with 512MB of ram) will work. Bandwidth in also of no concern incase of .ini files.
