To me avoiding a potty mouth sanction is easy. For one the Harvesters do not use emotional words normally. Secondly, there are many things that you can give the vulgarity they need with the phraseing of a statement.
To, me if the NPCs dont say it and it can't be heard on public non cable channels before 20:00 hours, then its not acceptable. When I RP a human and my human pirate does have a harsh tone and course behavior I tend to use Star Trek as my example of how to speak.
I do curse like well......a Marine in real life but, seriously it takes the same amount of effort to type a acceptable word as a unacceptable word. If anything it takes more effort to control ones anger and the accompaning urge to harm another as much as possible, when angry. In this case the only way we have to harm someone is to try for their feelings some how. Insults and for most swear words get to those faster.
That being said I think (I may be wrong) that the younger crowd may have a bigger problem of guageing time and place for swear words. Thus, its just best to avoid them all. So, if its not something you would hear in Star Trek, BSG, or Star Wars, then make one up. Of course there is always the tried and true, DRAT!!!
I also agree that a list would be cumbersome and cause a new set of problems. We cannot legislate good behavior or common sense. Yet I can understand the desire to have it in black and white considering some of the ruleing out there, somefolks look at hard coded rules as protection from admin prejiduce. In the end a new net would only make new loop holes and I think many admin have difficulty manageing the rules here now so lets keep it simply and find rules to abolish not add. Lets remember that the admin are human and unpaid so, lets leave only the most important things to thier hands.
To thier credit, I have no complaints on thier technical expertice. Anyway moveing on this is not a grade the admin thread.
On a side note slightly off topic. You folks need to lay off on Aku. We all know he has some hang ups but it would be hypocritical for ANY of us to think that we dont have some pet hang up too. I have seen very little of his post in THIS thread even BARELY bluring the line with his pet debate so, cut the crap. I see folks I even respect here takeing pot shots. That has to stop.
Hear him out and respond to the thread not him unless it is about the thread.
Anyway swear words are dated. All of them and when we resort to modern swear words we date ourselves and take from the emersion of others. After all we dont need the Liberty Rouges swearing like the Crypt or Bloods. Just as we dont need any scientist talking like Bill and Ted's excellent adventure. The slang is dated.
Stick to cleaver and timeless phrases. Or make them up. I swear in Real life not in game and I dont give a crap about children. You can get my view on kids in my sig. This is about personal approach to our shared demension.
I understand and agree that the rule has an up to Admin interpretation aspect to it that could be frustrating for some and yet I never seem to have had a problem with falling afoul of it.
Perhaps my role play is too Leave it to Beaver era to push those boundaries.
It seems quite obvious that none of the Admins are willing to put the list together, myself included.
Perhaps if someone else wanted to assemble a list and submit it for review (through Email not posting it on the forums) there might be some action taken beyond whats been suggested. Though I would not guarantee that any such list would ever be posted for anyone to see.
What would be more helpful than a list would be to see what people are sanctioned for, have an open sanction process. That would make the boundaries clear.
That's one of the problems is that we players see sanction notices, but don't see the evidence behind them or the admins reasons for the severity (or lack thereof), which makes the value of the sanction process to the server as a whole rather dubious, if the sanction process is supposed to deter others from the same behavior.

I've never run into any issues (though once when I got particularly irritated I could have been sanctioned, and I'm grateful those involved didn't report it), but I learned something from running a server for another game, as well as being an administrator on another message board: unclear rules lead to arguments like this one all the time, and the attitude displayed by some of the admins here is only fueling the bickering.
And when these rules aren't clarified, when the admins for no discernible reason adamantly refuse to clarify them, well... you get this thread.
But this is my final comment here. None of us are getting anywhere.
I agree with you Scorn, 90%. Something I forsee is people getting sanctioned for saying damn, and hell, those are both said on aformentioned shows. And the connom sense thing, common sense is in the eye of the beholder. To you and me swearing might be perfectly natural and thus common sense. To someone else it could be a totally different thing.
Im fourteen. I dont care wether you swear or not, I have my own server where i can do whatever i want when where and how. But still, you really honestly think that captains and admirals dont swear? Oh honey you have ANOTHER thing coming... Trust me, I have a bigger vocabulary than both my parents combined:)
I think Damn, hell and dumbass should be allowed, but no F-Bombs or some of the other more-so offending ones.
There's a line between roleplay and real life, Cam. Whether or not a real Admiral or such would swear is moot. This is a game. A lot of younger people play it. Now you could say: "They probably swear as well." but that doesn't matter. If it offends one single person, it's all the same. There needs to be a line.
I think in most cases it's situational. There simply can't be a set list, because what offends one person may mean nothing to another. The system we have now works. If you swear, keep it in RP and be discreet. Think before typing, it's not too difficult. If the word in question is questionable in your eyes, don't say it, or censor it out. If all else fails, you don't have to type it. It's not going to kill you to bite your tongue now and then.

...because what offends one person may mean nothing to another.
This is where I differ with you, it shouldn't be about what offends one person in one instance, it should be about what is deemed offensive by the rules.
Like all the rules, these should be well defined. Otherwise it's just mayhem with poorly understood boundaries and widely mismatched sanctions for the same offense.
Read the first line of my sig.
Rules should differentiate wether its ok or not.
If admins are too lazy, then dont be suprised when many more of these topics come popping out at you on the forums.
How is it mayhem? Use your head before typing. If you don't, you may suffer consequences.
It's only mayhem if you decide that, since the rules don't slap a sticker on your face with each and every unacceptable word, you are being unjustly sanctioned for not thinking your usage of obscenity through.
Again. Use your head. If you aren't sure, don't type it. This is a much smaller issue than it's being made out to be. Honestly.
