I've picked up on vauge hints that there will be some changes to the Gaians in the new release, but I don't know to what extent those changes will be. I don't wanna jump the gun here, but I would like to begin to give serious thought on developing Gaian culture.
I'd like to start out slow so that I don't take a mis-step on what is coming... so I'd like to hear some views from people on how they see the faction as it stands now.
For those that don't know much about them, here is their infocard:
The Gaians are a terrorist faction opposed to any alteration to the natural environment of a planet, specifically those brought about through terraforming. Many of the modern Gaians are ordnary criminals and pirates who consider an alliance with the Corsairs to be the best way to ensure their survival.
Soon after tourists began to arrive in Edinburgh in 690 AS, Cambridge scientists voiced their concern over the enormous ecological damage that even the most regulated visits could inflict on the planet. Almost from birth Cambridgers had drilled into them the stories of how New London & Leeds were blighted, so they tended to be very environmentally sensitive.A few of the younger and more militant scientists studying on Edinburgh accually went so far as to begin a campaign to sabotage tourist transports in an effort to discourage visits, but with little effect.
Once cobalt was discovered on Gaia in 740, the BMM began to make noises in New London about the need to establish a mining base there. What had been a quiet, bloodless campaign of active resistance blossomed into full-fledged conflict. Graffitti with slogans such as "GAIA WILL NOT BLEED" was spotted soon after. The eco-terrorist movement had begun.
Eventually any plans to mine the surface of Edinburgh were dropped -- mostly out of fear that it might cut into the burgeoning tourist industry -- but the Gaians had already broadened their horizons by an influx of radical elements from Cambridge who sought a ban on terraforming technologies.Planetform, Inc.was the natural target. What emerged was a militant terrorist group philosophically opposed to the exploitation of planets, and terraforming in particular. The group enjoyed considerable popular support on Cambridge, funded by the efforts of the legitimate arm of the Gaians called the Green Front.
While the Gaians and the eco-terrorist movement as a whole have made little progress outside of Bretonian space, Green Front propaganda is a common sight in Bretonia. Green Front commentators are often present on the news, and unlike the Mollys, a certain amount of tolerance exists for them in the government from those disinclined to antagonize their Cambridge connections. Over the years, the movement has broadened considerably until the majority of its sympathizers are environmentally concious individuals from throughout Bretonia.
The sole Gaian base lies deep within the Islay Ice Cloud at the northeastern edge of the Edinburgh system. From here, the eco-terrorists coordinate attacks on their enemies within Bretonia space and the Tau-31 system. Occasionally, raids are made on the center of all evil -- Planetform, Inc.headquarters at the Canterbury station in the New London system. Ironically, although they have strong Cambridge roots, there is no activity in that system.
The infocard has a few errors that have needed fixing for a long time, & but ignore those for now:crazy:
I've always felt that the Gaian faction & the Green Front deserve a higher profile, & would like you guys to give your say about them.
Well Burg, I see you Gaians as the hippies of Sirius so to speak. People who would normally not be out fighting, if not for the immediacy of the threats to something you hold dear ie The Environment of the planets near by. The players who have played Gaians are most of the reason for that. Players like you and Lodden have fostered the Gaian Green mentality in some of your RP that gives you that eco-hippy feel to me.
That being said, The Gaians hold a very important piece of real estate, and I think outside events are going to over take the Gaians forcing you folks playing them to re-evaluate your RP, and the importance of your faction in Sirius.
I'm very much looking forwards to the new developments.

Yeah, like Boss, I'm very excited to see what's in store...& I'm chompin' at the bit to help make the Gaians more than what they are.
I have very strong opinions on what they could be, but I try my best with my RP not to force my views of the faction onto others.
To me, the hippie stereotype is exactly that...a stereotype, & is an excellent smokescreen for the faction.
But Gaians are terrorists to the core:cool:
& I love the fact that Ugur created the NLH as a 'back to our roots' type of group. & have take the Corsair alliance with a big grain of salt.
My character is very darwinistic & has a level of massochisim that is often self-destructive, but will always put his people above him...even as he dreams of civil war.

Anyway, I'm ready to change with the times:yes:
Sounds like Ze'ev. I think the groups thought of as the Corsair Allies should be getting much closer to each other, than they are with the Sairs. Cant wait.. you have one side of the Tau's we have the other. *sadistic grin*

Ya'know...with the entrance to Gallia being right next door to the Gaian guard system, it could open the door for a possible economic windfall for the faction & could begin to decrease Gaian dependence on the 'sairs.
& yeah, the treehuggers & the farmers should get closer...if not to fan the flames of the B/K war, at least to attempt to sandwich Orkney & attempt a power-grab

I see what you want to do Mar. I'm right behid ya. Let's see if we can prepare and move into 585 with some pace.
I like Zelots comments too, a greater closeness with the AFA seems very appropriate, especially with all the effort Ze'ev made to form an Alliance when the AFA were setting up. My belief is the the NLH and AFA fit pretty much hand in glove actually. - Maybe we could look at some joint activities.
Regarding the Sairs, I believe we should foster the relationship, they do help distract the Outcasts and other enemies from our eastern flanks as a very minimum, although I for one have not flown with them for quite some time, although I visit Crete occasionally. Perhaps we could make some reaffirming diplomatic moves might be appropriate?
And the new Gallia connection will change things without a doubt, Edinbro' will become much busier and visible, so we'ed best have our act sorted out

Speaking for myself, my guy will take a bullet for the AFA without a second thought...besides the fact that the farmers are allies, back when Sean was incapacitated, The AFA was there for the NLH on a personal level & in my mind, that makes us all brothers from another mother.
My personal opinion of the 'sair alliance however is one of the big reasons I want feedback here...If we can squirm out from under their yoke & gain Gaian independence, I have no issues with them...but I expect major resistance from people about this.
Also, on another note, I would like some assistance: I need help in data mining any & all mentions of the Gaians & the Green Front from the Colony News Service on enemy bases. Will ya'll help me?
I love the AFA and greatly enjoy the idea of increased relations with them.
Sometimes it feels lonely out there being a Gaian but I am anxious to see the new update and no doubt the increased traffic it will produce. Also the economic overhaul will allow us to see more Planetform and OS&C making their rounds.
I have mentioned to several of our NLH brothers that I have found some info on a few Outcasts base, while out looking for subjects for my Outcasts experiments and have come across these potential event.
I wish to express my desire to have this scenario played out with full RP intent and RP consequences that develop from the conclusion of this scenario. (that oughta motivate the players in attending if there is something to Lose/Gain)
Opinions....
