Heya, Folks.
Based on the amount of factions I've seen during my time here in Discovery and my gaming experience of many years in different games, I wanted to know what people thought about skinning, if anyone knows how to do it and if they would want to. Of course, if this were to be, the admins of the server and website would have to OK it and allow for downloadable files.
For those who don't know, skinning is where you make a custom skin or paint job if you will for a ship. You can have a standard scheme for a clan but it has to be made for each ship that is used. It's pretty kool and it's distinctive as the factions we have. Of course, for anyone to see them, they would have to download the file. I used to do it years ago in Starsiege and downloaded the skins of most clans and factions.
Now, I don't know how to skin but I know we have some sharp people who could do it. Even a personalized skin can be made for credits I'm sure. I don't know how to do it but if this had enough interest, I would be willing to act as an ambassador to the admins for it. Just keep the skins tasteful and in character as much as possible. So, what do folks think on this?
Skinning for FL is a bit more complicated than usual, but it can be done with relative ease. Ship textures are broken down into multiple smaller textures that can be tiled.
For us to reskin a vanilla FL ship we would either need to replace each of the individual textures, or remap a new texture onto the model. The latter of which requires re-exporting the model. One of the other issues would be that multiple vanilla ships use the same .mat, example being replace one of the textures used on the Avenger, the change would also affect the Defender.
However most of the non-vanilla ships use single textures, or far fewer at the very least. Another point is that any skin changes will only affect the player who has replaced the .mat for the ship in question.
