The Size of Aland Shipyard (Omega 3)

The IMG are considered to be one of the predominant ship building factions in Sirius, and as such, I feel we are entitled to have at least one larger shipyard. It is our only shipyard. Yes, it is bigger than most any shipyards, but that's a function of it's relatively recent construction. A lot of, actually almost all, house shipyards are described as being quite old in their infocards. The IMG, striving to construct a state of the art station, built a large shipyard.

Aren't most IMG designed ships fighters? You don't need dry-docks to build fighters... Scarborough in Bretonia is a Bowex station, the IMG and Bowex are close friends/allies or whatever... surely they could just hire out their facilities rather than blowing so much money on a massive shipyard that wouldn't be in use most of the time?

Uh huh... I put the question to him a while back and he asked me to post a poll. He said the main reason he made it so big was for "original design". I don't see your point there anyway... Just because Igiss added it doesn't mean it's right.

Alternatively, I would be in support of having areas of it still under construction would make it more visually interesting than as it is now (a kitbash of the usual ones with loads of drydocks stuck on). This would also get rid of the shock of a huge station which appeared out of nowhere.

If someone could add the new bits required for that, it would be nice yes.

Just for note, Igiss designed this shipyard.

He's also an IMG and Zoner fan, which is quite evident throughout the mod.

I think it should be made more inline with the vanilla ones, but I really doubt such a thing will happen.

What about servicing vessels? The IMG uses allot of mining ships in the omegas and if they are anything like the big dump trucks / bucket loaders used in quarries today they probably need constant service. Replacing mining gear, hammering the dents out of it from many small asteroid collisions, micro-particles removed from the exhaust ports, etc, etc. I can see those needing yard overhauls once every 6 months to keep them in peak operational condition, and unlike transports, you would be lucky to fit two of these per bay.

no, my comment is not qualifying. - i don t say its bad, nor do i say its good. - creativity is a good thing - but it can also make it hard to include things into a set universe.

think of that .... :

you model awesome models for a huge space city - unlike any city we know. - larger than augsburg, around it, you place a shiney shield bubble, energy conductors, a huge shipyard - a dozen stationary gunboats or cruisers, weaponplatforms that reduce any intruder to metal bits within seconds.

and all that package goes to .... the gaians.

what the ship modellers need to consider ( and sometimes fail ) is to keep their ships "freelancerish". - that is what system modders need to do, too .... keep their systems within what freelancer restricts.

i cannot copy this ship and include it - cause it doesn t look anything like freelancer...



and thats why system modders have responsibilities, too.

The station model of aland is great, not just a copy of others, its new, i really like it, its just too big for an IMG shipyard.

Id like to see a Yard like this in the hands of the BMM or Samura, or Dauman, or even the DSE, but for independet miners?

Wrong. Gateway are our allies. Seeing as they have one rather small base, they won't be helping us build ships anytime soon.

We build the Spatial, the Ravens Talon, and the Charon for fighters. While the CR make more use of them than we do, we also have gunboats, battlecruisers, and a carrier. Finally, we also construct the atlas transport. That's one of the largest number's of ships in the game attributed to any one faction.

Truth be told, the Nyx, Hydra, Argus, and Zephyr all exist because the CR needed them, and they were put into the IMG because the CR had an IMG affiliation.

I do not believe fighters/bombers are built in shipyards, the zoners never had any, neither did outcasts, etc.

They're built on stations or planets.

and I just dont see IMG needing capital ships in any huge numbers, at least while they insist on not fixing diplomacy on whom they're hostile to, its zoner take two.

The Hydra has in it's infocard that it's short in numbers, deployed carefully, etc. and it's more difficult to make Battlecruisers and Carriers than to make Gunboats, if they managed to scrape enough together to buy them they wouldn't sell them off.. As well as that, they're only sold on Singapore.

The Hydra and Argus are sold on Jakarta, an IMG station, and that's more a function of having caps sold in guard systems rather than representing where they'd actually be built. While yes, the "IMG" capital craft are generally used by the Colonial Reunion, we still manufacture and crew a number of larger ships. The atlas, a large transport, is also built in large numbers.

I'll just sum it up by saying that the IMG need a shipyard. The fact that Aland is large is part of a growing trend in the mod to build bigger and prettier stations.
