i tried some other servers yesterday and for example i didnt saw any NPCs in Hamburg system..not even one...very small amount in some other systems..but ping was 75..so NPCs might have very big influence on the servers lag
Me and sting were doing missions and when we were both fighing at the same time, it became jumpy. This was when there was about 10 players on ( i think ). NPC's do affect the lag in a negative way, but i saw about 10 Xenos slogging it out with 2 Guardians and 3 patriots and all was fine.
Also, before that, i was killing stuff at the bering gate in texas for a guy who wanted loot. On and off there but the swarmers saved me. Came on when transports and escorts came from the lane.
The more NPCs and players out there, the more processing power and bandwidth we need.
Were NPC patrols increased in Discovery compared to vanilla?
We can always put less NPC out there, but i don't think that would help as we still have many players on server.
Once I reach home, i will see the results of the test. But for what i saw tonight, the only way to get rid of the lag is to get a more powerful server and a powerful Internet connection that can cope with the increased traffic.
Or for the time being, we reduce NPC patrols to no more of 2-3 ships. But that is not a solution, is only a way to postpone the problem.

Well, we have a big enough pipe. The bandwith is *NOT* limited over here, however if we go Dedicated we have to find a host that provides about close to a terabyte of transfer available.

Well, I could get on just this morning for a short while... I see everyone experienced same as I did.
Another observation: lag tends to increase when SF's are on (mainly in Cambridge and NL) I usually have a little increase in lag when I'm in Cambridge or NL too and I noticed there is really a high concentration of NPCs there. Try comparing now with the lag we all were experiencing with a lot of people in New York. If a high concentration of players would be in New Berlin or New Tokyo, we'd have the same result certainly.
What am I trying to say? Maybe just lower the NPC patrols where there is a high concentration of them, not all of the NPC patrols (I mean, whatever is easier to do for Igiss) as places of really high concentration of NPCs are the capital planets and Tau-31 where the KNF and BAF are doing their little war...
I don't know, just throwing ideas here...
If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God? - from 'Nightfall' by I. Asimov The Outcasts consider Siniestre Nube a sacred place for several reasons. Early explorers discovered a jumphole within the depths of the cloud that leads to a strange world of ringed stars and strange craft. All ships in the burrial ground are placed facing that hole to honor the Alien Spirits. - An Outcast rumor
I was just on, had lag on and off in multiple systems, with and without NPC's Present. I didn't do any missions, I was trading and waiting for transfers. I was going back through the Cortez to Manchester, when I somewhere unknown exact coords, got the server crashed note and was promptly dropped on my butt here. Hope you had better luck.
