The Y was supposed to be cut off to give the illusion of a tear. The filter is that way because it's supposed to be an old painting, and the small text is there to make you look at it closely and read. As for the border, it was a simple lasso tool and then inverse with a cut off the edge. Then cut and pasted into a new document and saved as a GIF for the transparent background.
I actually did not know that when I put House's head on that raving rabbid. I saw lots of people putting his face on different things, and since I like House M.D., I thought, why not?:P

Honestly, the edge looks much too smooth/clean to be a tear. Remember that fabric frays, unlike paper. Try using a rough brush to erase a bit more of the edge and make it more ragged and a small pattern to make loose threads. If you want it to look like a piece of canvas torn from an old painting, you'll have to make the fabric filter much subtler and scale it down more (higher threadcount). Before you do that, put the image that you're using through the oil painting filter. It works decently.
