I followed the Vista turorial to the T. Still does not work. I can play freelancer. I can see the server. But when I double click it, it says that I cannot connect.
What's weird is, when I first installed freelancer on my new computer, I was able to connect. I did a few trade runs then went to sleep. the next day when I tried to connect, I got this error message, so I just kept clicking the server and after a few more tries, I got in. Then I got disconnected from both my computers at the same time (I have two computers, one using winXP and other using vista).. When I got disconnected (side note) I lost about 50 mil worth of stuff in space sicne I was doing a transfer from one ship to another and it got blown up by an npc and my tractor beams wouldn't work. Then I got d/c and lost it all forever. I tried to reconnect but could not do it since then from the computer with vista. I can still connect from the computer with xp.. "Why are you dual-clienting?" you may ask? Well, so I can escoret my trader with my bomber and it makes it more fun. "Why don't you just play freelancer on your XP comp?" you may also ask? My comp with XP has XP because it sucks. It's 7 years old and barely runs freelancer at decent settings. Also, my main computer, which is new, is more set up for gaming. The older one is simply for doing trade runs or, in diablo 2 making a transfer game... Anyways, to the point. It was working on vista, which means that I'm not going to accept the answer "Freelancer CANNOT play on vista, so give up", as I have heard on other forums.:rtfm:

Well a couple of things:
Have you upgraded to the new mod version? I guess you may have but if you haven't you won't be able to connect.
It's general frowned upon to have more than one computer logged in for the same player i.e. dual clienting - particularly if the server is busy. Please don't do this.

I have Vista Ultimate and I put in the disc, installed it and then the discovery mod and mine worked. It was only with the use of Anti-virus such as AVG which was once useable with it that then with an update it wouldnt let me in sometimes and other times it would/
But its not nessisarily true to say that Vista (All Vista) does not allow freelancer, because frankly its not true.

Ok, maybe we'er making some headway here. I have AVG. It's not on the blacklist, but you sound lik eyou'r having the same problem as me with it, or had that problem. I have closed avg though and the problem is still hapenning.

Should I try to uninstall it?
AVG is known to be 'bad'. I could be wrong, but my understanding is: an AVG automatic update came out a few weeks (maybe months) ago and since then Freelancer doesn't work if AVG is installed.

AVG does not let you play FL anymore, shame as i liked it. Uninstall completely as sometimes it leaves things behind. I now use Antvir ( think thats what its called, im at work right now) its free and seems to work well.
One thing to note, as i found on my friends comp, when ticking the "run as adminisrator" box make sure its running in xp compatible as well. Same window just above the admin box.
Yes the problem is simply the AVG antivirus on vista. The update (about 4-5 weeks ago) suddenly made Freelancer multilayer null. You are going to have to completely uninstall it. Avira is a good free program you could use (be sure you get the "Personal Free" version, not the Premium demo) XP should be fine because it doesn't follow the same Internet protocol as vista. No problems have arisen for XP from what I hear.
' Wrote:if Vista's protocol is what's doin it, there is a way of modifying it to run with XP's 4 protocol and not Vista's 6, iirc
I'm not quite sure it's as simple as that. Its the computer, and freelancer. You would have to a lot of coding and modifying at the risk of your computer. It's too much work just for AVG. I'm sure your probably loyal to the program (I was too) but playing discovery is much more worth it
short story... I found Discovery about 3 years ago. I had just gotten my new comp (vista) w/ McAfee (black list). I tried everything I could to work arround it. Enabled/disabled IPv6. Deleted it, downloaded programs, installed XP on a partition... anything I could think of and more. In the end, I've had wipe my hard drive 10 times. Replace the motherboard (I over clocked it trying to run a program that wasn't designed for my comp). When I got my computer back, I tossed McAfee and DL AVG (when it was working) and that was this past July.
In short: just switch to a new anti virus (I gave you my suggestion Avira). Takes only about 6-10 minutes. (probably cheaper too).
ALSO: If you haven't already, and you have a router, port forward, should help some.
