Right, been fiddling around with these for about 3 hours to no avail... running Vista 32 btw
I had a clean install of FL, then installed FLMM, then 4.83. Activated 4.83, run FL and I'm back on the CTD error and 'Freelancer has stopped working' message on startup which I fixed with a patch originally.
Attempted to deactivate 4.83, failed.
Uninstalled FL, tried to find FLMM to uninstall it but it doesn't appear in Programs and Features and has no uninstall utility, so deleted it from Program Files.
Reinstalled FL, reinstalled FLMM, dl'd 4.84. 4.84 appears in FLMM with a message about another instance running, should it be deactivated? Yes, 4.84 apparently active, even though there are NO 4.84 files in the FLMM mod folder (though there appear to be at least some in the FL folder - can't manually place them in the FLMM folder since the download doesn't seem to give me that option, it just runs in FLMM). Run FL, same CTD bug. Try to deactivate 4.84, same failure.
Now what? The content.dll file IS there in the FL folder and I've tried the delete autosave button.
At some point I also had FL server running but could only seem to host, not join, and I couldn't run the game- all shortcuts etc just led to FL server.
for one, we're running 4.85 beta now, look for it in the transition forum.
the uninstall is located in the start menu (start > All Programs> Freelancer Mod manager) deleting it from program files in c drive dies nothing.)
make sure flmm has admin privileges before you load a mod (on the flmm icon: right click > Properties > compatibility > check off "run this program as an administrator")
load the mod (double click on it) it should unzip itself automatically. (it's a .zip.flmod file, its not native to any other programs other than flmm)
after its loads, run flmm (if it doesn't do so automatically, and activate discovery 4.85)
MAKE SURE THAT NO OTHER MOD IS ACTIVATED OTHER THAN 4.85!! the server FLHook will detect any other mod as cheating and will systematicaly kick you for it, then ban you after multiple offences.
do this with a clean install of freelancer (uninstall, and clear the programs folder of all traces of it's existence)
If you plan on connecting to the discovery server with vista, make sure you don't have any of the anti-virus programs on the black list. (AVG may not work anymore, Avira is a good (free) anti virus to use though) http://discoverygc.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=9310 (most of my notes are based of of DBoy's tutorial, helped me greatly)
Can't even get FL to run now! Getting the CTD error on launching, I'm pretty sure the 1.4 unnofficial patch fixed it last time but it doesn't seem to have done now.
Any ideas? I know this is general FL and not the mod but you folks know what you're talking about...

You need to start again, de-activate any mod you have running then un-install freelancer then un-install FLMM then delete the left over game files then clean windows registry then restart the computer then re-install Freelancer and play or re-install FLMM and activate a mod and play.
Buut still getting CTD on FL vanilla, I did get round this last week somehow, and I think it was the 1.4 that fixed it, but would that be incompatible with 4.85?

If 1.4 refers to a patch for the original game then I don't think this affects mods so there shouldn't be a compatability issue.
It sometimes takes multiple un-installs/installs of everything before it all clicks and works properly, you just have to keep trying.
