I guess I was too general when I said "Strategy". The goal is to create a battle scene, then show advancement and placement of troops, as well as showing reinforcements and tactics. The genre of the battle doesn't matter; I have a junior friend who did Sci-Fi battles, and he aced it.
I was going to suggest something about the Mongol Empire, the largest land based empire in the history of the globe it turns out.
I'd really advise just not doing Freelancer, even if you do do a sci-fi thing.
Freelancer has to be one universe where strategy, tactics and just general brains are lacking. I mean, who the hell keeps building battleships when they get crushed by their equivalent cost in cruisers?
Any battle scene - placement and then advancement of troops.
Pretty simple - break out your copy of Terrible Swift Sword.
Two brigades under Henry Heth are coming down the Chambersburg Pike. They run into Bufords Cavalry. Reynolds 1st Corps shows up to reinforce the cavalry. After that it becomes a feed more troops in from both sides, fire, manuever, and the next thing you know, you've the first day of the battle of Gettysburg.
There's also an excellent series of books out that talk about what could've happened if Lee had won at Gettysburg - pointing out that he quite probably would have STILL lost the war.
You might also mention to your teacher in passing that actual battlefield tactics are studied by amatuers. Logistics are what wins wars.

Well, then let's say that this ISN'T Freelancer, but we use this general setting: Skirmish, Small-Scale battle, to retreat, to overwhelm, a failed counterattack, then a desperate win at the end.
You know after seeing your "strategy" I just had to laugh. He who has the biggest stick is not strategy it's just a slug fest.
Anyway you want to talk about strategy then talk about chess. It involves way more strategy than the RTS games.
Been here since Discovery 4.77 (lurk mode engaged)

He flies through half the system before going back to New Berlin, where he cruises from one side of the system to the other, hugging the sun as close as he can. All the while, he flies near Battleships trying to scrape me off. I finally send out the white flag, and move back to Sigma 13. However, it was a ruse, and he bit. Knowing his trade route, I interdicted the trade lane and the chase began anew. It ended, an hour after it began, with me retreating, out of Countermeasures and getting very irritated.
He kept boasting how he has never been caught; I'd like to see him beat until he begs to pay, then beaten some more.
