I never knew it existed either. And I think overlord and tazuras are absolutely right i mean it basically gives you a radar with nigh infinite range... so wats the point of shelling out mounds of cash for the decent ingame radar systems?

It only updates every five minutes. Also different scanners dont let you see ships at different ranges, they let you do cargo scans at different ranges and maybe make places appear on the map at different ranges, not sur about this one though.

From a lawful point of view it is perfectly sound because the naval and military forces would likely have secret spy equipment to detect the nearby vessels in foreign space, certainly sensors in their own space. However, it can provide for too much of an advantage to piracy since a pirate can know that it is a transport as opposed to an enemy capital ship. Pirates should not have this kind of knowledge, maybe Outcasts or Corsairs within their closest foreign systems, but not loose entities. I actually use this list a lot, but I try my damnedest to keep it within roleplay and have to be extra careful as an unlawful, but it is certainly abusable.

I agree, but most of the time that's not what it's used for. Usually it's an OORP "I need to know what that Outcast in my system is flying so I know what ship to kill him with" type of situation which is silly.

If that was the case, I could stop shooting just about everyone.

In that case he told you what he's flying. He made the conscious decision to let you know. That's really different than people being able to see what you have without your permission.

I love the list, I hate the fact that it has ship types listed. I admit, I've used it. I've used it for exactly the same OORP meta gaming situations that I hate the list for. It's there, its legal to use, so I do. I'm not so self righteous that I'll avoid doing it just to prove a point. Still, I don't think it should show ships.

I wouldn't mind if it didn't show ship classes, you can tell that by looking at their rank. The main use is seeing what faction they're actually in, so you can tell whether or not you're going to get pewpew'd when you undock or not. Not everyone is kind enough to wear a faction tag.

For the Core.

Well, you should never get pew pew'd right when you undock unless you undocked unlawfully. This is called base camping and is against the rules. If you are worried about getting pew pew'd after you undock unlawfully, or not right after you undock, well that's all just part of RP, isnt it?
