Am hoping anyone can help with the following problem(s), would be much appreciated if anyone has an idea where i'm going wrong with this one? :D
After a friend went through the installation with me for Discovery, we couldn't find the DSUpdate.exe anywhere within the Freelancer nor Mod folders but could connect to the servers and where getting the correct splash screens (The Discovery Mod ones etc...), however when attempting to create a New Character to get onto the servers, even with a random sequence of keys it would not let me create a character due to 'the name is already in use on the server'. Any ideas with this one as my friend had never encountered the problem before?
After getting to this point though, there was still no DSUpdate.exe in the EXE folder, only a config file (we downloaded a 4857 zip with the update in and manually installed it).
This is where things went from frustrating to... well even more frustrating.
I decided to do a clean install and followed the Readme to the letter. I removed all of the FL stuff from the machine, reinstalled the basic game with no add-ons (running it on XP). Then after downloading Mod Manager Beta 3 (instead of the Beta 4 one I had as the Readme advised against this) and the .zip.flmod file.
I then installed Mod Manager and then instead of the manual installation we did before, I ran it using the Mod Manager.
With this new install however I can no longer get the splash screens and the DSUpdate.exe and .config files are still not present (this method was done twice, both with the same result). Am hoping if I get the DSUpdate thing sorted then I won't get the 'every username taken one again!'
Anyone have any ideas with this one? Any help please? Am getting antzy to get started! :)
Many Thanks (and apologies for the methodical length of post, just didn't want to miss anything that could be important! :))
But now on to fixing your problem. You need to do another fresh install of FL. Also, get rid of the mod manager beta, use version 1.3. This is the most recent version that has been proven to have no substantial bugs, all the more recent ones... well, just dont use them.
After that re-download 4.85 v4 , install it into FLMM 1.3 and activate it. This should solve both the DSUpdate and the character creation problem.
If you are like me, you may manually need to change the .zip.zip to .zip.flmod for it to auto-unpack I don't know why.
EDIT@Tazuras: Ooooh, that's probally it. I use Opera.
Unfortunately, it didn't work - still no DSUpdate at all! However, have found a link for the 80+MB 4852 Beta zip.zip on a German site - will try that over the 484 one from the Disco site and see if that gives the DSUpdate.
Thanks again and hopefully be on Disco in the near future - i'll be back on here whining if I can't get it working this time! :P
Hey Guys. Seems like there's lotsa general frustration going around on this one. Allow me to add on. I downloaded the finale version using the link you so graciously provided. Problem is the file saved to my hd in an unknown format. Copying the file into FLMM doesnt work as FLMM simply ignores it. I also cannot get winzip , 7 zip , J zip or even good old windows to extract the package as it is in an unknown format. I used the webservice to locate the correct program to identify the file ...no luck.
The file name simply reads : Discovery4.85.zip.
Do I need some mysterious program to actually read the file or is my umpteenth download of the file simply corrupt. BTW I had the same problem with the Rebalance mod when i downloaded that. My download cap is limited and I seriously dont wanna keep on downloading files unessecarily over and over again. I'm running Win XP SP3 updated. All hardware drivers are up to date. I was able to play up to the latest beta , updated to 4.857 via DsuUpdate no problem up to the day before the finale mod was installed on the server. Therefore I dont think my hardware is at fault. Any ideas?
I have reinstalled a fresh Freelancer , reinstalled FLMM 1,4 and tried all the tricks I can think of.
I have used FLMM to try and install the mod and I also tried simply copying the mod over the FL game folder like with the last beta version. I'm runnning out of ideas here and heading into my 3d day without my FL fix. Its becoming frustrating to say the least.
Mines all up and working now. The way I did it was to add the rename .flmod (although not sure this did anything really), then right clicked on it and 'opened with' FLLM instead of the normal unzipping. This unpacked it as required and then I was able to get online after using the Freelancer.exe.
At first I thought it hadn't worked, as the 4857 server was still unavialable, however, other servers were, so I sent a screencap to my friend who plays as well and he confirmed that the 485 servers shown were the ones he uses - so all cool. Hopefully, this will work the same for you! :D
Hope that helps and thanks to everyone for the help in getting me up and running. :yahoo:
