This weapon does the same DPS for the same damage per energy as the mortar, but requires 4 seconds of sustained fire to put out the same damage that a mortar does in one hit. The advantage, like said before, is that when a mortar misses... you still lose 1 million energy for nothing. If you miss with this thing, you'll lose a few hundred thousand, unless you keep the fire button held down.
And you call this a beam weapon? In a battle, it would look like any other fighter weapon, just with huge projectiles. It would make Siege cruiser look like it's spitting.
' Wrote:Now granted, it would be more difficult to use, as you'd have to keep a sustained 'beam' on the enemy to do the same amount of damage the mortar would do in one go,
In fact, it would be easier to use as all those projectiles would greatly act as tracers.
Can we please not change the siege cruiser, i just bought one and i love it to bits, it is epic as it is.
Not flown the BD cruiser though, i wonder if it is as concentrated on the foreward gun, i.e. what are the stats of the ship as a whole, i remember fighting 2 in my corsair cruiser, with a friend in another praefect, they BD cruisers were obliterated.
Hull Damage: 150,000
Shield Damage: 75,000
Range: 3480m
Speed: 9999m/s
Refire: 0.25
Energy: 1,000,000

That's not a beam weapon that's a SNAC for Crusiers... And it's way too fast. You could nail fighters with that easy, it would reach it's maximum distance in 1/3rd of a second.
A beam weapon is supposed to be a continuous stream of energy. Such a thing is not possible on Freelancer, the closest we can get is a high refire rate weapon (or slow projectile, slow refire weapon). What you've suggested here is not a beam at all...

How come? The speed of SNAC is 300 m/s. That's like saying a rock is the firearm for Iraqis.

For one thing I haven't suggested anything so don't even try. A weapon with very slow refire, very high speed and visually very long projectile certainly looks more of a beam weapon than some continuous "pew pew pew"
In fact, what you said might only look as a beam weapon when you are not moving or turning or anything. And I don't know but I think that rather spoils the point.
Its a very good cruiser, I won't deny that, but compare it to the liberty seige cruiser.
Its bigger,
It turns slower, making aiming alot harder,
It has far less of an allowable weapons range (basic, zoner, kusari defence turrets, you shouldn't really use zoner anyway)
It is out turned by the Kusari Destroyer, despite the Blood Dragon Cruiser being lighter than the Kusari Destroyer,
It has less weapons than most cruisers,
It has less hull than most cruisers,
It has less hull than the Liberty Seige Cruiser...
I mean really, wtf!?
What is its power like compared to the siege cruiser?
It would seem a bit of an unfair match, but isnt the skill of a good pilot the ability to do dammage no matter what he flies?
Edit: one more thing, the BD cruiser and siege cruiser are both support cruisers, and are to be used as such, alone they are not very powerful, but alongside a bigger ship (BC/BS etc) they are very powerful, and can do a LOT of dammage. They are not ment to 1on1 ships, they are supposed to be part of fleet battles, and will suffer if not used as such.

So the BD cruiser is way worse than the liberty seige. The liberty cruiser is smaller, handles better, has more armor and a better forward gun.
Of course, everything matters on skill, although I think its fair to say that both of these cruisers are meant for seige, even in fleet battles, Im pretty certain a Kusari Battleship would be able to rip apart 3 or 4 quite easily.
Actually, I believe it IS possible to generate an actual beam pulse. You'd only have to have it fire once, because the lifetime of the projectile would be very long, and indeed, the projectile itself would be very long. We'd have to experiment with projectile speed and range to get the effect right, but it could be done. The kind of high-refire beam guns you guys are talking about present some visual and balancing issues my method, if possible, would avoid.
EDIT: THE THREAD SLAYER STRIKES AGAAAAAAAIN!

Actually, that'd give FOUR times the DPS as the mortar (10/0.25=40 15,000x40=600,000). A proper beam weapon isn't possible due to high refire rates making the server unstable - more projectiles=more server workload. However, I'm sure there is a way to at least give them the visuals of a beam, a long projectile tail comes to mind, however, it would still be ineffective.
What effect does the BD cruiser forward gun use? is it like a normal gun or is it as the Lib cruiser's? Both are supposedly impossible to get on target.
Ships aren't really designed to be compared together unless they're supposed to interact - a Liberty Cruiser won't be fighting Kusari nor will a Dragon Cruiser be fighting Liberty, so you can't exactly compare the ships that way. The same applies to Gallic ships and weaponry - they're designed to fight each other factions in their zone of influence, not unrelated factions elsewhere.
