Mining is high risk, high yield.
Trading is lower risk, but yields less cash.
For once, insurance companies actually have a purpose, and escorts are more important than ever.
And yes, I've been at the end of *coughs* another miner's guns a few times and been forced to render up some ore for his thirsty hold. But I also learned about transport shields. Bwahahaha. Next time we meet, it will end differently. I've also pirated for ore. (Not a lot, I know how hard it can be on the poor miner...) I think that I might have a balanced viewpoint on this issue. At least, I understand the balance. Maybe everyone does.
There's a lot of problems, yes, and mining should be moved out of Pennsylvania. But it also has a ton of potential, especially for escorts and insurance companies. They can ride the mining boom all the way up.
Or, if you don't like high risk, you can trade normal commodities.
It's unfortunate but the experiment seems to be largely failing. A system designed to encourage teamwork is, instead, largely generating sanctions.
Players whom wish to mine and then sell their product unmolested choose to, instead of hiring a single bomber to cover their rears are instead resorting to sanction threats, ban threats or simply cursing out the pirating party in conjunction with untold numbers of f1s.
Mining transports, laded with 50 million in ore, fly without escort or even common armor and then fall into streams of swearing when they fall into a waiting trap.
I believe the worst that I have heard are complaints about groups of miner ID ships raiding Tremont. Apparently the chief complaint was that these miners raid the rings with such regularity that they return every 30 minutes to refill their holds like clockwork.
I found this to be the saddest thing I have ever heard.
The persons whining about being pirated were pirated by the same group of 3-5 transports over and over and over and over and over again were complaining to -me- to remove their ability to do so. They weren't seeking to defend themselves, they didn't think to take care of their own mess. They didn't think of capitalizing on their own ID's ability to jump said miners, rob them blind and then blow them to hell.
They wanted me to make it impossible for those people to pirate them so they could powermine in defenseless mining ships in peace.
A lot of work went into the mining mod and I would like to continue to realize the vision that it represented. But as it stands I don't think that the bulk of the server possesses the maturity to manage the concept of labouring to secure their fortune, defending it and then capitalizing on it. Better they spend 2 million to fill their hold so instead of screaming **** YOU ******* YOU BANNED when requested to drop 1000 ore they simply shout LOL JUST KILL ME when requested to hand over 2 million.
That would be a really big shame. I mean a massive shame. But the mature people on this server should not be punished because a few fools decided to take 50 million worth in ore around without an escort.
And due to the new trade changes profits for that are, quite frankly, pathetic. I set up a Junker Salvager a couple of days ago to test the new mining mod. I finished setting it up two days ago and mined yesterday.
And guess what? I made enough to pay for 40% of the Salvager. And that was when I was on and off. If I was trading I would of made half that.
Another good part about this mining is that people can't Alt-Tab out whilst making a profit. With trading you can just get in the lane and Alt-Tab. I admit I did that a lot, because I was browsing the forums. But with mining you have to constantly be in-game to shoot the rocks and tractor in the goods.
I find mining quite soothing, and after a crap day in school (so, everyday) I find it peaceful to just be able to sit in a field somewhere - quiet and alone - and mine. It calms me down, because it keeps my brain tracking rocks instead of constantly having to think about everything in my life that sucks.
Dusty, you and everyone else who worked on the mining mod did a brilliant job. I mean brilliant. I kudos you and everyone else who was involved with it. So that work should not be wasted just because a few d**ks (I use the word because that is the only word I can think of to describe them) abuse the Mining ID and sit next to the lanes and pirate people for their cargo.
And I agree with Mont, one of the best features of Disco is this new mod. Please, please, please don't remove it.

's simple.
I sign those points aswell. The mining mod also promotes more role-play for insurance and escort companies.
[17:45:39] Wolfs Ghost (Murphy): Tom, you have problems. Go kill yourself.
[19:25:12] Johnny (Jam): Tomtom, I will beat you with a spoon.
[14:22:56] Prarabdh Thakur: KILL HIM WITH A SHEEP.
[17:40:48] Eagle (Junes): Tom should be slapped with a spoon.
[11:32:18] Warspite: Thank you for being so awesome Tom. <3
[18:17:36] Metano: I love you tomtom
[20:06:24] Warspite: I will seriously give you epic head.

That's the thing though. You've got it all wrong.
I -am- one of those "d**ks" with a mining ID jumping you in the lanes. I'm everywhere. I'm the DSE guy mining next you. I'm a bomber running around trying to get someone making 40 million an hour to pay me -2- to protect you and being told to shove off and I am jumping your armorless, clueless mining ship to steal your ore because you CBA to defend it.
I am working the mining mod from every single angle to see how it works out.
The people with miner IDs are using it perfectly. I was in the Tremont field a few days ago in my mining ship trying to re-produce the water bug when someone in a GMG miner tried to pirate me for ore.
Do you know what I did?
I turned around and blew him to hell because I'm in a mining ship and the thing is a tank. I scored 1000 units of silver that he stole from someone earlier
Did a single other mining ships in the area try to help me? No, they just kept on mining. One screamed for the cops to help and then carried on. One other // spammed that he would ban the guy if he tried to pirate him after me.
The Miner ID is the red headed stepchild of all of them. It can't do anything you can do with an Hogosha, Junker, Pirate etc ID and it can't do a lot those can. Its a nerfed DSE ID in other words. The problem is entirely with the players and their me me me mindset.
How can one 2800 cargo transport rob -four- mining ships back to back? when all are 2.5k from one another? Killing two of them? If they all ganged together that would be fourty transport turrets raining down hell on that one ship. I wouldn't want to put a cruiser in the way of that kind of firepower.
The fault isn't with any of the IDs, it's entirely with the players.

well, you could resurrect the idea of having ships drop their cargo if they F1, or instead of all try and make it conditional on how much you have (like drop any cargo you have more than 50 units of)
I like the mining mod, and I hope it's here to stay.

Selfishness. It is present in most players, mostly OORPs.

Not really needed though, when someone f1's there is plenty of time for the pirate to destroy his ship before it disappears.
Eh, don't be sorry Dusty. They totally deserve it. That said, just shut down mining in pennsylvania for now. I'll be keeping an eye on the area when i'm on my admin. maybe i'll even lock down penn and boot out anyone entering over level 40:P

I say it's both.
Today I learned about two views:
1) "Every man is bad on the inside, the only reason they do not do as they please is because there are laws."
2) "Men are good, it is the society around him that makes him bad."
I believe in the first one, and that can be prevented by making laws.
Lets think. If there are people with Mining IDs going around pirating miners, is the person really mining? If they are pirating other miners, it doesn't make as much money as mining the stuff yourself (or does it?). Pirating other traders is basicly announcing "I want to be a pirate."
The miners who pirate other miners should not be miners, they should be pirates.
Edit: Dusty, you have every single possible right to be peed off. And I suggest, like everyone else, locking down Penny for a while.
