Roughly 2000 screenshots on my end as well. Converting them all to JPEG files, even with minimal compression, reduced their total file size from 5.79 gigabytes to 1.0 gigabytes. I shudder to think of how that would be with five times that amount.
Simply put, convert your old screenshots that you will no doubt never look at again. Your harddrive will thank you for it. (Recent ones should be spared, of course, just in case they're needed in their original format for whichever purpose.)

If your computer is pretty strong, it won't lag too hard. For example, mine is able to run the newer more graphical games at max level, thus hitting print screen doesn't lag any game.
It relies mainly on the video processing power that you have, I believe. Although, once I re-SLIed my video cards, the print screen effect vanished.
