I did a quick search for races and did not turn up anything, but granted I did not search that deeply.
Already mentioned, but races in CT are nonrp. Races bring several fun elements. Cash prizes, gambling, and intrigue.
If cruise engines make for boring races, disallow them. The Dublin track is not too big to require cruise. Since you will be forced to use impulse/engine kill/thrust it introduces an interesting timing/skill function. Lets think, in real car racing the cars are basically the same. Time is made in the pits (which I doubt we could simulate) and in the driver decisions.
I would prefer a server side update to the mod over an event so that a race can be a more casual thing. Two guys at the bar flapping their jaws decide to put their money where their mouth is sort of thing. That would make for better rp. Of course I guess some simple honesty would go a long way in this.
Not to say some big race event wouldn't be cool. Transports and liners camping out hours in advance. Different heats and matchups. A junker salavage frigate just outside any authorities reach taking bets. It would be pretty rocking.
All this being said, I made my racing Freelancer, "Ki-Daring" piloted by Rod Smart a libertonian rich kid who likes high stakes thrill seeking. Yeah, he could fly a ship with better defensive and offensive capabilities, but why give up the speed?

As soon as the new Tottori system is incorporated into the mod we'll have a real nice racetrack. It's through a mine field so you wont have the option of leaving the track.

I'll race for sure.
