Someone mentioned that IC must own a lot of companies that defaulted on contracts by now. Suppose the businesses and contracts those companies had were taken up under IC management rather than dissolved. Over time, they'd need to replace employees, and the company would become first a sub-company under IC's umbrella and finally indistinguishable from IC itself. So, if someone is hauling cargo while waving around an IC ID, it would be fair to say that they're doing the (at least semi-lucrative) jobs of previous people who weren't able to pay their dues to IC and/or got pwned by the bad end of the IND's legal staff.
This logic, however, makes them able to do literally anything a corporation could reasonably be found doing for money, save exclusive government contracts (DSE building gates/lanes, Ageira building the parts for such, etc). However, these would be purely "extra-curricular" activities, which explains their lack of major non-insurance contracts like those possessed by the "Big Three".
I'd expect most of the insurance and commerce maintenance stuff to be done either on-forums or by third parties- the IND basically wave the Mandalorians around like a giant hammer, and IC at one point legally owned both House Kusari and House Rheinland (not the sort of thing you'd do as an everyday interaction ingame). So, ingame, I'd expect them to act much like your average trader (with a few big names to throw around and some dubious connections, not unlike a lawful counterpart to the Slaver's Union... the IND and the Union even both have contracts with the Mandalorians now, too), but on the forums they would reasonably be involved in arranging all sorts of deals.

Mmm I see your point. However, they aren't really acting like Zoners. They operate in all house spaces, without retriction, and they don't enjoy the same neutrality as Zoners do, or the same types of diplomatic relationships for that matter. They are clearly affiliated with the "BIG THREE" which puts them immediately at odds with unlawfuls, whereas Zoners tend to have worked out an agreement with the factions that they encounter. So honestly, there are a few distinguishing characteristics that define them. It is true that they do have their hands in quite a few pockets. When talking straight IC, I think that Sovereign has it correct.

Zoners never bought not one, but two Houses. Although from the way they've developed in Disco you wonder if that'll change...
IC never built Juggernauts (though from Vanilla, I was under the impression the Zoners never did either) and ran away from the houses in the name of freedom and fellowship like a bunch of space hippies.
But I see your point. Ingame, a Zoner trader is pretty much just a trader with a Zoner repsheet. Then again, ingame an Ageira trader is pretty much a trader with an Ageira repsheet- the neat research stuff they do happens on the forums or otherwise out of the game, unless you negotiate contracts ingame (which everyone else can do too).
To me, the interesting and distinct part of corporations lies in only three things:
1) How they deal with pirates
2) How they deal with lawfolk
3) What they do on the forums with contracts, stories, etc
While the IND respond to all three by buying whatever they want and placing money on the heads of those who won't accept it, IC is pretty regular in the first 2. The Lane Hackers don't like them, but the Lane Hackers don't like Ageira either. They have reasonably neutral status in all the houses, but so do the Zoners (the ones not parading around in warships, at least). What separates them is not what they do ingame, but what they do outside of it and how that colors things. Cryer can't do research ingame, can it? Same idea.
Yeah I'd say in game you're basically defined by how you interact with other factions. Basically, though, all pirates treat you as just something to pirate, and all lawfuls treat you as something that gets in the way, or just a nothing. It's been hard defining of corps beyond just making money, and I don't really think anyone's got the winning idea yet.
I just want to make sure something's clear: I have nothing against IND, but they aren't exactly Interspace. This would probably be why they have their own ID now, eh? :P
Unfortunately, Benjamin's right about a lot of corporations blurring together in-game. Freelancer's a simple game, and that's sometimes a bad thing. Hell, maybe if they could stick out easier I wouldn't have needed to post this.
IND isn't interspace, i mean.. they have their own ID, and they.. don't really behave like Interspace they behave like IND.
Man if you do make this faction I'ld love to see it in action.
That mostly means forum actions, loans, ship buying and re-sales etc. Perhaps some actual insurance for traders as well etc.
Woah, faction? Hold on a second, I barely play enough to keep a subdivision of the 101st around! I was just asking for an indie character and curiosity.
Besides, I'm not much of a leader.:laugh:If someone else runs it, I wouldn't mind helping though.
(edit: Dammit, Ivan, now I am thinking of starting it. Thanks a lot.)
Well, a true Interspace corp is all that other corp people are waiting for.
Bunch of Luxury Yachts with people making business deals in them.
You should do something devious for a start.
For example make a deal with some faction that's exporting an certain commodity alone in that system and buy shipping rights. Then sell those shipping rights to other corps for monthly fees.
Hire bunch of goons to intimidate others. Man it's all there, and you're in the middle of it with that Democritus or what's the name of that ugly yacht.

Well I've been thinking of an Insurance-branch of Interspace for quite some time though, however - it seems that people are generally after people with 100+ posts to organize something like this olololol.
However, if you're going to make something, then go ahead.
