This isn't a post to suggest changes or anything like that, I just want some clarification on the Mercenary ID.
Mercenary ID Infocard (Partial)
Mercenary ID grants its ownere right to fulfill lawful and unlawful bounty contracts, escort traders, hunt pirates and terrorists, participate in military operations. Mercenary ID owner is not allowed to pirate, openly join unlawful forces, or trade on a regular basis.
Now my question pertains to openly join unlawful forces, what exactly does that mean? Does that mean we can't take jobs from pirates? Or does that mean we can't say, as a mercenary, join a faction that is unlawful? IE tag and whatnot.
And second, my apologies to the IND, I should have paid more attention to my ID text, I didn't realize it prohibited pirating or I would not have taken action in the attack on your convoy, at least my kill wasn't on a trader!:)

A lawful faction would be well within their rights to make such a merc hostile or KoS. Just because they're being paid, doesn't mean they can get away with unlawful actions.
Then again, breach of ID restrictions should earn someone a criminal ID, shouldn't it?
I guess that's up to the admins to decide though.
Now, the way that reads to me is that mercs can be hired for some "dirty" jobs, if you will. However, such jobs must be conducted quietly and descreatly. For example, jamming communications during a hit (RP entirely, requires all parties to agree to the RP), or just hitting them when they're alone and out of the way. Nothing overt, such as joining in palms-up military operations.
So yes, you have a few options as a merc. You just have to get creative. ; )
This is the real true story of rock and roll; it was not about anything more then, how to live your life, as a gangster, in sartorial splendor, and turning the world into a place where normality would never return again...- Malcolm McLaren
On the KOS bit, honestly as a mercenary, I would actually expect those I've worked against to want some kind of recourse, after all, I'm only one man.
As for my actions being a breach of "ID policy" or whatnot, it is alitle sketchy, because it says "Military actions" not "Lawful Military Actions" like all the lawful ID's.
In movies and real life, just because someone is a mercenary, it does not mean they are a good guy. By RP My character is supposed to be a "do anything for the money" mercenary, which means most lawful entities would look down on my character for being willing to sell my services to their enemies, or flat out pirate scum.

As for your post Kane, that is very unfortunate... very. I was looking forward to making cash in battles for anyone who would hire me.:(
Maybe an un-lawful merc ID needs to be added?

Heh, I have mercs... I work for lawfuls and unlawfuls, for the highest bidder. And I group with them, sometimes. I usually just do my job, with a char, then switch it. Safe and easy:)
Ok, this is a little bit of a grey area still and probably does need addressing. Currently though, the merc ID
should be used for those jobs above the law, and the generic pirate ID should cover those outside of it.
Please don't try to have it both ways, there is enough latitude there for a good bit of roleplay. Lets be fair,
pirates do not hire mercenaries to fly with them, makes you look like you are one crap pirate !!! ...
Working for a faction based as semi-unlawful could be construed as crossing the line, and you will find yourself
KoS with the lawful ones, and work drying up quicker than water in a desert.
Two characters then guys, with similar names, or as close as you can get them would do the trick.
One Merc ID, one pirate ... We don't want more rules, do we ?
My two pence ...

I think a really good question would be, "Can a merc be hired by a pirate type ID to either assist in pirating vessels, or possibly, launching assaults on lawful characters and or factions?"
I'm fairly certain, but not entirely, the answer is "yes." So that brings us to our next question, "What's to stop a merc joining forces with pirate type ID (players) and just saying, if anyone asks, oh I was hired by them?"

Well hopefully people would notice that a certain merc player/faction is consistently grouped with pirates.
If they are having that much fun with pirates then they might as well get a pirate ID.
I dont think a pirate would hire a merc to pirate, why would he want to share the booty. More likely for:
A)Escort pirate from A to B
B)Distract local militaries in nearby systems
C)A scout, to say when a trader is coming through a jumphole and what its escorts are.
D)To distract escorts.
I also see no reason why they [the mercs] couldnt have a 'current job' board(topic). So it's clear that they have been hired to do such and such for a certain length of time. With the contractor and price possibly remaining private.
With grey areas I suppose we just have to rely on the spirit of RP and common sense.
