www.qj.net Wrote:Since the Final Fantasy XIII release back in December, there has been word buzzing around that the game is an epic disappointment with frustrating linearity to boot. If this Hong Kong gaming mag is to believed, it's all very, very true. Having rated the game a woeful 4/10, the magazine goes on to call the game the "biggest swindle in history." Harsh review much? There's more where that came from.
Translation:
Scenario: 2.0 "An epic tear jerker"
System: 1.0 "Such a crude system barely warrants being called an RPG at all."
Graphics: 9.0 "Full marks here."
Sound: 7.0 "Mostly quality."
Enthusiasm: 1.0 "As if you could play this for 100 hours! I could put up with 8."
Total: 4.0 "To think it got this bad"
A few excerpts from the accompanying text includes:
"The game is complete linearity until the open areas near the end. You cant even backtrack."
"Of all the RPGs Ive played in recent years, this is the first which has been so linear that its little more than riding an amusement park ride."
"I had heard the opinion that Its amazing once you get to Chapter 11, but why should you spend 20 or 30 hours on a game to get to the only enjoyable part? Just how do they intend to make me play this? Do they think Im some kind of masochist?"
"A button mashing puzzle game with no real strategy or RPG elements and a plethora of annoying features, game as a whole is little more than a digital novel of sorts."
"For such a game to approach 2 million copies sold must be due solely to the strength of the Final Fantasy brand"
"biggest swindle in gaming history"
"biggest joke of 2009."
Thoughts? There is a MASSIVE flame war of fan-boyism and how the 360 ruined the game due to multi platforming.
I was looking forward to this game, but someone had to be honest on the reviews I guess. Nice to see a change over the 'FXIII is god'.
I gave up on the Final Fantasy series at 11. I started giving up at X-2. I'm not surprised that 13 might fail, and they're making ANOTHER MMO Final Fantasy, which is coming out almost the same time as 13. Holy crap, guess what it's named? FINAL FANTASY 14.
X isn't linear. What the hell are you smoking? Did you even explore for the side quests? I bet you don't even know what the toughest boss in the game is. I'll give you a hint: It takes 50 minutes of constantly doing 99.999+ per person, per turn, and taking upwards 10k damage a hit from this boss, to kill it.
You not only have to find a way to break the 9.999 damage cap, you need to break the HP cap.
X is linear in design, consierign everything is like One big crooked line, course, I never beat Seymour Novus.
Boss is Nemisis or something? Area Death monster?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPNZWqzklv8 And I take that back, Nemesis is the runner up for first, since if you aren't smart enough to auto-life, he's going to wreck you. That guy must have been doing a lot to stack his health. I've seen people who've broken the limit get instakilled by his one group attack. Except that one he does at low health. I forget what it's called.
Gotta have the International or the other version out to fight this boss however.
I like it though, Penance and Sin. (The boss is Penance, the end boss is Sin (Well officially, it's Yevon, but still.))
