What I do is play a faction, and then don't give a damn about ship or gun stats. I fly whatever I get, period.
It's a lot more fun if you find a group of people - faction - and an area of space you like flying in, and ships that look nice to you. If all those are fulfilled, you're green to go. You'll get used to whatever ships or equipment you use. Everything is typically balanced to be good in some way, doesn't matter what vessels you use.
And it's more fun if you concentrate on the faction itself and not the guns.
All ships are top...
There is no BEST Gunboat, all got their + and -, those with high armor arent that agile, but have a bit more firepower, those with a weaker armor are very agile, means they can dodge better.
I would suggest you to fly something small, a Gunboat isnt the best you can get, as mentioned, they can be killed by a VHF or a single Bomber...

We can only tell you which one we prefer. Some like the Corsair gunboat, or the infamous tridente, others like the police ones, perhaps the LR/Molly gunship or the Gaian or whatever. Choose a faction or atleast a side (lawful/unlawful) and then choose a gunboat for that purpose, if you're that much of a gb fun.
Like some of the others have said, if your new to Discovery spend some time getting to know the factions and doing a bit of roleplay.
Spend time flying the smaller ships and work your way into a good active faction, don't just buy a gunboat/ship and go looking for trouble or you'll just end up getting yourself in trouble with the admins and no-one wants that to happen to you.

*sighs*
No.
Discovery is NOT about buying the best ship with the best weapons so you can kill everything. There is roleplay, do you know what this is? Well if you don't then <strike>GTFO.</strike> learn it before you go buy a trident and lol your way through New York.

But hey, it might actually be true for Liberty because most new players start there. So your chance is higher to meet an unskilled one. The rest of sirius however is not recommended for gunboats. Except if you like explosions, no matter if they are on your own ship or the opponent. But then again it can happen to you in Liberty too;)

My personal favorites are the Rogue Gunboat and Orca "BHG" Gunboat. Both fine pieces of kit.
However, despite the 8 turrets, let me assure you that the Outcast Trident gunboat is the worst of the worst. Don't get it. It's terrible. Every other gunboat beats it hands down (c'mon guys, why didn't you say this from the start?)
hmm... Zapp has a point there. It takes longer to take down a Tridente than most other gunships thanks to the holes, but then again it doesn't really punch very hard. Even dual missile Tridentes die easily. At least from my experience
