Current explosion effects are realistic. Maybe rather focusing on creating 'damaged status' to other non vanilla battleships like Legate in flames for example...

... why do you think so? As a warhammer fan (your signature) you should be used to things blowing up big way (like an exterminatus).
fluff wise, the explosions should be bigger - i mean, which kind of generator do these ships use? something powerful enough to power a battleship is just PRONE to result in a BIG explosion if getting instabile... and shooting at it with big weapons should do the trick. bigger explosions for me:)

I think large explosions make sense. Its a ship, carrying vast stores of oxygen. Oxygen splodes. Its a ship carrying vast amounts of power, probably fusion generated somehow. It's also a ship full of weapons, ammunition, etc.
I think the explosion should vary depending on how it gets blown up.. Nova torpedos/Mortars = Large explosion. Shot to death by fighters.. falls apart kind of thing.
