FreeSpace Open Source has a pretty kickass Wing Commander full-conversion. The missiles always kill me in one hit though. I hate that. Not used to it.

In reply to the OP's original question, there is a single-player mod that recreates much of the original Privateer experience: Warzog's Privateer: the Reckoning. It's available in a few locations, but I've seen it recently on Wing Commander CIC, here. (edit: I forgot to mention that there are a few CTD bugs, the reputation system is too simple, and getting equipment as a battle 'drop' is rather easy. It's fun, but not finished...)

Privateer-Mod
Its fun to play, but full with annoying bugs. I think I still have it somewhere on my hard drive....

Though there is another Mod that just replaces all the FL ships with Wing Commander ships so you can play the Freelancer SP with WC ships.

Well it came out as the Kilrathi Saga which came out about a decade ago, contains WC I, II, and III and you can download the all the Black-Ops and Special-Ops for I and II via it's downloader.

EDIT: EA can't re-release anything from WC I to The Price of Freedom due to Roberts holding on to those copyrights (same thing with Privateer). They might have kicked him out of his own company, but he still retains some licensing rights.

WCSaga is a completely different game... It's a new game using the FS2 engine.
