I have noticed a fairly annoying trend online lately. After every encounter, someone quotes the rules to me. Now I stay in the rules and take the time to know the rules. What bothers me is that people use the rules as a form of gloating. If I cruse away from a battle, some had to say to me " You crused so your dead " or "your crused your dead leave the system" Now, that would be fine if I showed any sign of NOT following the rules, but when I cruse out of a battle, I set a waypoint on the nearest JH or base and go there and change charecters. My request... Wait untill someone shows some sign of not following the rules before you quote them the rules. Dont automaticly quote them when some one dies or leaves battle, It takes something away from the RP when after any player is killed there is a recitation of the rules. If some one breaks the rules, take a screen, send it to an admin or whatever, but dont assume everyone is going to break the rules.
Whilst I do disagree with constant rule quoting, it has almost become necessary as there are many people who show no regard for the rules. And people have started to want to prevent re-engaging altogether. And although I myself have not said that many times. I have always found it necessary when someone cruises as shield running/re-engaging annoys me.
So you think Its fine to pre-emptivley tell every player the rule everytime, well if thats how we have to do it, we're all going to have to get a whole lot quicker with typing to get all those things.
I call for sanity people, wait for someone to show the slightest eveidence they might break the rules, then message them, but please wait for some reason, people are annoyed enough when they lose a fight(I know I am) and when your on the way to a JH to leave the system, haveing rules quoted at you (that you are following by the way) is pretty humiliating. And makes you want to turn around and break the rule( not that I condone breaking of server rules, just giving feelings)
Personally, I always try to quote the rules in a RP kinda way... say for if I'm playing with my BH character, I'll sarcastically put it in a way that boosts my chars Ego (he, bless his soul), or if I'm Sgt. WebOtus, I'll put it as if it is in direct violation with the specific airspace regulations.
This can't always be done... and not EVERYONE. You have to be absolutely certain you know what you're talking about with quoting a rule to someone - which is why I can understand that Zelot will get irritated when he is actually playin' within the rules...
quoting the rules in a roleplay way is fine i think. quoting the rules to make the other one feel bad - or to pretend the other one is violating them isn t a nice move though. in that case, its not very roleplaying like.
somehow i feel that it should rather be police and house faction military that quote rules as they are. while traders (faction and general), general military and mercenaries and pirates should do that in a roleplaying way (if the really must) that fits to their ingame role. .. unlawfuls wouldn t quote the laws i guess.
in general i d say - the more rules there are to follow, the less roleplay can be done. rules are there to enforce roleplay for those ppl that are not soo accustomed to playing a role, that need a pattern to imagine a role. those ppl that have a very specific view of their role which fits into the game setting wouldn t need rules anyway. and as long as they have a common sense for "fair play" there wouldn t even be too many balance / anti harrassment rules needed.
but as it is - telling someone the rules in an apropriate way is OK, when the breaking of a rule occured - not before. there are many rules and they are not all in one place to read up. but telling someone the rules before there has been a breach would be like an admin telling you a warning, before a violation happened. wouldn t make a player feel very good. ( or the console kicking you for cheating, - just cause it might be that you "might" think of cheating some time in the future - uh, allright thats too farfetched lol )

Hmmmm. This could lead to an idea...
What if the Admins create a faction which falls under there rule - they are not part of it though. They employ players (with like a year online experience, or something) into the faction, and they fly around, making sure everyone is obeying the server laws - kinda like the admins footsoldiers.
This would help the admins as well (they are a busy lot) - but only people they trust is allowed in the faction !! They could even have there own ship (which only this faction is allowed to fly to make them more recognizable) !!!!
most of the time when i have to tell a player a rule, i am IN a combat situation... its very very difficult to type out a long rp way of saying 'dont re-engage' while you are being shot by 2+ players

Thanks for letting me vent
Well, one thing we can try that may reduce in rule quotes is to RP in chat when you leave a fight.
You could say something like " This is too much for me! I'm leaving this system and not coming back for a while!"
This should tell your opponent that you understand the rules and doesnt really give them a chance to quote
rules.

What you think ??
Camera ship. Any other ship would lead to exploiting and eventually discrediting the entire administration team. MMO companies hiring personel for GMs have a lot of issues on this side as well, even though they have legal system with NDAs and such. This place isn't some holy ground, otherwise we wouldn't see daily logs in sanction thread.
