Okay, let's get some links here, then, regarding the funding and just how controversial the Iman is that's behind this:
First, this one is an opinion piece, from the American Thinker, which is a conservative site - with this piece about the Imam:
Quote:[size=small]Through another organization Rauf started called the Cordoba Initiative, he created the "Sharia Index." This will measure how closely countries follow Sharia, or Islamic law. While Sharia can cover such relatively innocuous aspects of Muslim life as religious weddings (hopefully not to twelve-year-old girls), it also demands that all Muslim life be governed by laws derived from the Koran, without the intervention of civic institutions, such as democracy. And the Koran dictates that everyone, even non-Muslims,must ultimately live under Sharia. Do you understand how that is in direct conflict with our Constitution and other aspects of our secular society?
Now we go with a straight news piece from the New York Post.
Quote:But in an interview with a London-based Arab newspaper earlier this year, he admitted his fund-raising would also extend to Muslim nations around the world.
The possibility of tapping the radical rogue Islamic state of Iran for funds comes as the United States is stepping up sanctions on the regime in retaliation for its support of terrorism and what is feared to be an illegal nuclear-weapons development program.
In appealing the commission's finding that the building fails to qualify for historic preservation, Sekulow pointed out that the landing gear from the first airliner to slam into the trade center plummeted to earth and crashed through the roof of the very structure now scheduled to be demolished for construction of the "ground zero mosque."
And last, I'll go to the Huffington Post - which is about as liberal and left wing as you can find in the United States.
Quote:
Critics, however, said Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the founder of Cordoba Initiative and ASMA, would not disclose the source of the funds. He's also been criticized for telling CBS' "60 Minutes" last year that "United States policies were an accessory" to the 9/11 attacks.
Last, here's an image from Europe ....
Are ALL Muslims extremists? No. Is it legally okay to build that mosque there? Yep. is it a good idea? Nope - and I think that the backlash from this is going to reverberate for quite some time in this country, starting November 2nd. (The rumblings are already getting loud...)

Stupid beliefs. You're not special. You're just another country in the globe.
In regards to the original post, I agree. What the hell's the big deal? Yes, it was a tragedy. Get the hell over it. stuff like this happens all the time in other countries. If you think you're special because of some "God Given Right" well... you're wrong.
See...ya have the right ta say what ya wish...Hehehe, but, beware, with rights come responsibilities. Safe to say such things in the safety of one's home, but face to face courtesy is suggested or all bets are off:)
Peh, the world will collapse upon itself with the current religion crap rate. WW3 will be all about religion. For that big imaginary man up in the sky!

Or religion could be gotten rid of. Somehow, things seem more and more indicative that that is the eventual heading.
If you'll read my original post, you'll realize something: it's not about whether the mosque should or shouldn't be built, hell, it's probably a really, really huge faux pas to put it there. I think you all missed the point.
Quote:The only enemy you have is your own ignorance and fear; conquer those, and you have no reason to hate or discriminate. Without those things, the world will be a much better place.
I'm not talking about rational debate being bad. I acknowledge both sides of any valid argument.
That right there isn't a valid argument. That's discrimination, and, in the second poster's instance, a gross generalization.
What I am trying to get at here, however, is that discussing this shouldn't degenerate into hate-mongering. We shouldn't be opposing things just because it's related to a certain religion, the mosque being the most current example of that. Points such as who's leading the project, past ties (and current ones), where the money is coming from; those are all valid arguments against it. "It's bad because it's Islam and they're our enemies" isn't valid. That is what's really starting to get to me.
TL;DR version: this is to the average American, telling them to stop hating for hate's sake, make educated choices, and understand people of other cultures and religions. Not whether or not the mosque should be built. Which, as it was my main point (and the most recent issue), I can see why people would jump to that conclusion. For a bit, I jumped to it myself... @.@ then I reread my point and thought back to when I wrote that and what I was thinking.
Just thought of something, I've seen a few Nazi-related posts here, so think this:
Saying all Muslims are responsible for those action of the select few 'Extremist' ones, is like saying every german was responsible for WW2, as opposed to JUST the Nazi's, or blaming ALL Americans for the actions of american bankers that somehow ended up with China owning EVERYTHING. Or blaming every chinese person for their owning more money (As a nation) than nearly anyone else (As a nation) and still acting like a third world county...
No wait, their communists... so WANT the blame shared... right?
Anyways, apart from the bit about China, you see my point right?
I do not think it is the religion itself that is generally the problem. It is -always- the guy who selectivly interprets what he sees in their holy book(s), to push their agenda. And, there is the fact that the Bible has quite a few books not commonly reprinted inside it( E.G The gospel of Mary, The Apocalypse of St. Peter, Etc), that more or less completely bunk lots of the selective interpretation supplied by manipulative men. And, frankly, just because a piece of scripture says something, it does not mean that every one of the faithful practice it, either. So, yeah, more tolerance, less bigotry. And try to avoid cable news, srsly. Fox is right wing propoganda, MSNBC is Left wing propoganda (although in this country, it's more like Center-Right), And sundry others simply try to influence you, A La
