As a trader who runs a very popular route, I've noticed a rise in pirating attacks. I have been forced to station more and more (properly tagged as mercenarys) firepower in the sectors to keep my profits from getting plowed. Is this a good practice however, I ask? Even if you don't F-1 out of the fight amd let your ship be pirated or destroyed, is it still against the rules to log back into your merc char afterwards? RP'ing that is simple, "I have a merc on retainer and I put a call out to him". But is it right? Don't know.

It was allowed under certain rules, but now it is a flat no. Hire an Escort or maybe some factions will start doing their jobs instead of selectly logging in <_< Or do what most traders are doing. Buy a container ship and load it up with buckshot turrets. No fighter pirates will ever get you and with that many turrets sometimes you can give a gunboat enough trouble you can make it to safety. Personally, I'm found of life 4 debs and the rest buckshot. That will chew up a pirate quick like.
You could also just pay them or let them kill you. It's only one kill and the most profitable routes it isn't going to hurt you since they are only allowed to pirate you once.
How many traders got away from you? I remember being pirated by Nova. Ambushed by two bombers, one fighter, and a gunboat. Scared the @#$% outta' me. After combat, I asked what they wanted, gave it to them, and left. But it's okay for them to run. The traders have gotten clever. And think of it like this:
If you were a trader and you had a chance to run, would you? DUH!
It's called taking advantage of the situation. Hell, thanks for telling me this new trick. I think I'll use it now. Secret click and F3.:haha:

This is the bit that I do not agree with. However, I am not sure if as a trader you can be killed once or multiple times until you pay. Also, if the trader has no where to go and is cornered by the pirate, you should pay. In RP, i'd rather live than die...
Shagohad:
Enter cruise manually, Shagohad, just in case the target is over 19.4k away. Otherwise, it stops you moving.
Addendum: Cruisers.
If I was a trader, which I am not at present, then I would just thrust away from the cruiser traveling in a circling motion, and as soon as he stops firing, enter cruise, then out turn the cruiser in question. In case you haven't noticed, most cruisers with 8 turrets have less damage output if they were gunboat turrets. Also, the big guns are very slow, meaning easy to dodge. Cruisers are not worth pirateing, unless a specific line of "pirate cruisers" are made with increased thrust speed and decreased hull and weapons numbers, which I highly doubt.
... all these rules of "only pirate a trader once"... "no cruisers for pirating"... etc. is actually more for reliability than it is for RP.
What's the use of being a Bounty Hunter (or a merc) if every trader has a battleship stored in the next System ?!
And why the hell would you want to pirate a trader, if you already know that you're gonna have a battleship on you if you do ?!
My char Sgt. WebOtus used to be a trader in his younger years - and that was it... just a trader, doing what all traders does, making profit to make more profit... not to buy a bloody colonial fleet !!
If you get pirated and you know he is still remaining on the same spot, take a different trade route, or hire some guns !! It's not like there is only ONE acceptable trade route... I think pirates should be allowed to pirate anyone who comes within their range, wether it's for the second time or not (that doesn't mean, though, that a pirate is allowed to go hunting for a specific target four systems away from him !!).
And as for pirates in Cruisers... it has it pros and cons, but that would keep traders on their toes, instead of them being bored the whole time... good traders can get away, poor ones must pay up or hire help.

But what I mean't was that you leave the trader with no option but to either die or pay. Most people die because they don't want to pay, but I think from now on i'll just keep killing them until they do pay.
And yes, Victor, I agree with you. However, this isn't to say there isn't a solution. A certain friend of mine and his pals pirate in gunboats, and because this person has been around for a long time, he knows when battleships appear. When this happens, they just switch to battleships too, and suddenly its 3 battleships against one.
So, if pirates work together, there isn't much that a trader can do about you on his own, and I have seen a lack of cooperation between traders. Not because they don't want to, but just because if they wait, then they lose money.
It shouldn't be necessary for pirates to have big guns every where, but it is at present. However, with that new rule, things will change.
Pahh, Train CDs work fine. About the ship jumping, yeah that's way out of RP, especially since they are F1ed, not docked... Personally i prefer to make pirates fight for their meal with my CT.
