I just started playing on the RP 24/7 server today (my first freelancer internet experience) and came away with a couple of concerns/questions.
1) I noticed that my Outcast opponents were flying in an -extremely- erratic manner and had great difficulty hitting them. I can only attribute this to lag/ping times because they were simply not maneuvering in a way to obey physics. Is this the same for everyone? The time it took to complete missions due to this radical jinking was way overboard and made starting missions almost too tedious to consider as a means to make startup cash.
2. Besides jumping in the lowly Starflier and shooting at bad guys, is there another more peaceful way to get starting cash and a trading ship? My RP idea for my character is a miner/trader but it appears I'll have to begin with combat to build up any funds. Is this true or am I missing something in Discovery?
Thanks!

I would agree with McNeo and AzzAzEllO. If you wanna remain independent go with the mining to start. If that is not an issue for you than I would suggest joining a clan. If its money you are after might I suggest RepEx.
OOC: I know dont start with the recruiting. Im oppurtunisitic what can I say.

ON MY WAY OUT OF RETIREMENT
I'll get a feel for the server and MP gameplay before I commit to a clan, but I do hope to join one eventually.
Made about 100k mining silver in a Defender, bought some chain guns, man those are so much fun to shoot:)
Much better start than earlier today with the pea shooters and combat missions only.

I'm not sure if your aware of the tags you get by being top reputation with a faction sorry if you are aware of them but when I made a new character I never realised at first and was running around with a police tag because I started out with a few combat missions, This can affect which ever faction ID you wish to use, (I.E. a pirate ID and a police tag is a no no) It's easy to fix with a little time though.
Like I said sorry if your already aware of this, Just thought it may be a usefull bit of info.
