Hey folks, another banter before I head to dreamland.
Do you think that the Guard ID's are just there for us to get out keyboards around a capital class ship? Or do you still think of them as 'status' ID's, like high ranking officers and the like?
I don't consider ID's RP devices but instead consider them as necessary gimmicks used to provide guidelines to preserve the overall Freelancer setting. So no I don't consider the ID at all when it comes to the RP rank of the char nor do I have anything like that in consideration for GMG|. Also the Guard ID is not just for the larger ship classes but also for the training ships kept in Guard systems. Factions are able to use a few ships of their enemies in their Guard systems for training purposes.

They are not a status ID, otherwise they'd be given out by admins. They're simply (like the former Battleship Lisense) a way to make it harder or act as almost a waiting period (like getting a gun lisense). The REQUIRED BS lisence raised the BS's price by $250,000,000. Quite a lot. With the requirement removed, battleships were lowered to $500m +. Guard ID's are just the waiting period.

Quote:Agreed. and the lowest BS costs around 430 mil
Indeed, I calculated this when they first changed it. (-$250,000,000 from original buy price) It was a good change, we will see what happens to Guard ID's in the future, maybe they'll be removed or only for Admirals/Presidents etc.
The guard ID is not really that important.. if you compare to the guard systems importances in some cases.
A lot of faction, officials one as well, don't bother with he guard ID at all and The ''Tag'' is superior Period.
Unfortunately, I think this topic might turn into the lolcap drama.
There's two situations I can think of when Guard ID's matter... (edit: not rules-wise or anything, just in general)
First was before the wonderful powers that be fixed the GC repninja, the only way to get neutral with some of the Bretonian house corps was with the GC Guard ID.
The other situation is faction split ups, where one particular part of the faction designates some ships to be used in certain areas and others not. Though the only one I can think of for this would be the Padua Liberty Rogues.
I don't like Guard IDs. Waste of time, like many other parts of Discovery. It's like Disco is trying to be a job. They don't screen out incompetent people at all, and, like trading, tend to be more of a headache than anything.
The guard IDs carry additional restrictions over the standard ID, typically. That is why they offer bigger ships, in a tighter enviorment. It also prevents every new player from trying to jump straight into a battlecruiser without actually reading up on what's required a bit...
