1:
when this forum allow encrytped messages, i am sure it half year we have forum only with encrypted messages....
2: i think is better to have them separate as on one pc
Just so you guys understand where some of us are coming from:
The idea was to allow certain RP interaction that is typically always behind closed doors to be partly visible on the forums. For example, you would see snippets of readable text and encrypted text in a single post. If this encryption method will not be permitted for usage, that's fine. We will simply continue to work in Skype and PMs and no one will see a single bit of that information.
Metagaming is human nature. The moment someone reads anything, they are affected. Most of what you see in the RP forum is posted by people who understand this and are okay with the consequences. However, Agmen's post today regarding how his Zoner should have accessed the encrypted message, only shows how easily everything gets metagamed. It was an honest mistake because Agmen thought the message was open to all Zoners. These mistakes happen all the time, not to mention folks who just plain ignore "encryption" tags.
However, if there is real legal concern then of course that takes precedence. You won't find complaints from me.
I don't see what the big deal is. Possible RL legal headaches that can possibly cost real money trumps any players desire to ward off metagamers by 1000000%.
...& like was said before, I also wonder why anyone would want to bother to post any encrypted RP on the forums at all when it can all be done on skype.
If you don't want people to read something on the forums...don't post that something on the forums.
Oh, & also, I say pffft! on the idea of sending decryption keys to the admins...that's just more work for them

For many yes, but not for all.
Ya know, human nature and such is a nasty thing sometimes.
@A&L: Noted et understood.
In a brilliant tactical movement, i charged backwards.
Why post it on the Forums if don't want that anyone can read that? I don't understand that. Plus it is only a Risk for Leggy, a huge Risk. So kinda a big No.
"Who is it doing this synthetic type of alpha beta psychedelic funkin'?"
1- Encryption is meant to actually secure important information. The fact that it is used in a supposedly gaming-oriented forum can lead authorities to knock A&L's door. Many apparently legal sites have been used to coordinate illegal things (child porn sharing, terrorist attacks..) by using that, or less evident methods. And authorities do watch over it, even if you think the opposite.
2- The reason of an attacker taking down both services at once is not a realistic concern. I'm sure both, the rented server, and the A&L hosted forum server have a good mix of hardware and software security measures. And I know perfectly how a network of zombies could detriment the performance on both services at the same time. Still, having a backup server for data is always nice (I guess both the game rented server and forum server keep redundant backups on each other of player DB and, maybe, forum DB?)

I won't comment on what security measures there are inplace on any of the servers.
As for the backup issue, there are redundant backups on each of the servers, as well as offsite on two seperate servers, on USB keys, printed out on punchcards, transferred to magnetic tape, DAT drives, removable firewire harddrives and transcribed then printed out on dead tree storage by outsourcing to a company in Mumbai.
1: A&L hosts things. A&L can set limitations to content as he sees fit. Plain and simple. If there's concerns of metagaming in certain communications, then either use private messages (which can be initiated with a "please PM me, faction X leadership") or use a different communication channel alltogether, such as Skype.
2: Leaving it as is is probably the best idea, provided A&L is kind enough (or in posession of sufficient beer?) to continue hosting. Considering that DDOS in our recent history, two targets would make such an attack far less effective.
